DOD45 - Resistance 45: A and B Side Protest

Ceschi and StapleMouth on the same song again after 12 long years. Important.

Navy Blue - Sir Render

I was extremely confident in my prediction that this album would be very bad. I had every reason to think so. Well, it's out and I'm happy to have been wrong because this is somehow, against all odds, NOT very bad. In fact it might just be the best album of his I've heard to date. And the funniest thing is that this ever so slight deviation from the mind numbing banality that is 2020s Abstract Hip Hop is all he ever needed to do. This is still very much in his style, but it no ... read more

Hawd Gankstuh Rappuh Mc's Wid Ghatz - 2 Hype 2 Wype

Can't say I care a whole lot about the gimmick going on here and it's annoying hearing the abundant interludes detract from the *real* songs, which are quite good actually. Besides the comedy which would feel right at home in the ironic spaces of modern internet, this thing is very OF its time. People really were just doing anything back then and that's great.

Boards of Canada - Inferno

The first time I've really been able to get into the ubiquitously praised atmosphere of Boards of Canada. Every constituent here feels way more alive than on any of their previous work and as such the songs don't meld into one flat nothing (unlike any of their previous work!). The percussion is energetic, almost synthwave-y and has a punch to it I most certainly did not expect from a BoC release. I think abandoning lofi-ness in favour of a more clean production was definitely the ... read more

Quadeca - Dark Magic
NR

This shit sound like if a 2017 summer hit tried to be RYM. Genuinely zero difference between this and what they play at H&M.

JPEGMAFIA - EXPERIMENTAL RAP
0

Everything he's never been good at, especially being edgy, crammed into one album. Of course it was never going to be good. I'll try not to parrot the same criticisms already repeated ad infinitum on twitter because somehow it took until now for people to realise JPEGMAFIA sucks and everyone's doing my job for me. Instead I'd like to draw a comparison to Stice because I got reminded of them a bit while listening to this. And that's not meant to be a slight against ... read more

"I'm getting tired of dudes rapping like Kool Keith and pretending it's brand new when Kool Keith was rapping like that in 96"

Czykita - Na otarcie Ε‚ez

The kind of weirdness you can only find in 2000s Experimental Hip Hop and nowhere else. I don't know what possessed everyone back then to be doing this kind of shit, but I wish it would come back.

Hareld - Inhaler Dorm
79

New Age Baby Faced Wisdom was great, but a bit too ambitious to the point of spectacle sometimes drowning out emotion and vulnerability. Inhaler Dorm is way more stripped down and on point, and as a result lets the heartbreaking human portrayals shine more. This feels like something that should've ended up on Fake Four or Circle Into Square, not Deathbomb Arc.

Rae Sremmurd - SremmLife 2 (Deluxe)
60

I've long since moved on from listening to Trap music for like 12 hours a day but after revisiting this many years later I might just go back to doing that ngl.

Serengeti - Mixt Tape VII
60

Demos and alt versions of some of Geti's greatest songs and verses. Obviously not as awesome as their "proper" versions, but still incredible.

Edward Skeletrix - Body of Work
30

Quite hit or miss, but on the right path and a definitive improvement over the missed potential of Edward's Museum Music and Im A Monster's frankly awful homonymous album. This is just as scattershot as Museum Music was, but individual sounds are built upon more, ideas are not arbitrarily discarded and are returned to frequently over the course of this album (for the most part). Some of it still doesn't quite work for me, especially the rather trite deep voice slogs and some ... read more

Masters of The Universe - Microcrusifiction

Mixing limitations meld this album into one entity that's not particularly interesting to listen to

Jookabox - 317 Ways
50

Man, I'm mad. One of the catchiest beats Bizzart has ever been on. One of the most touching yet simple Indie Rock (I think) songs I've heard in quite a while. Some quite well executed weirdness. And then there's some absolutely pointless low effort beatboxing accompanied by meme-rapping and annoying electronic fucking around. Why?

Retired Astronauts - Retired Astronauts
30

A rather interesting concept with very hit or miss execution when it comes to the actual music. Sometimes the Indie Rock parts are rather nice, laid-back sounds that make you feel exactly like the cover, some make you feel next to nothing. The rapping, while often charismatic and quirky, has some potholes in it too. "I'm not sinatra but I'm just being frank". Overall, it mostly delivered on its biggest premise - the quirkiness and charisma of its concept, which is what ... read more

Emalot - bituMETROmpette

Some of the scrunchiest, squelchiest, most beautifully layered Glitch Hop production I've ever heard. The fact it comes from a guy that's practically unsearchable and only seems to have this release to his name is absolutely fascinating. AbSTRAL compost flows super neatly on these futuristic palettes. Competent on all levels with zero shortcomings from either member. Please listen to this.

Vylet Pony - Gonarch's Lair
10

Oh wow I was actually worried I would like this because I semi-enjoyed the first song. Thankfully for me it quickly devolved into annoying ass circus music and I don't have to live with the fact I enjoyed a Vylet Pony album.

Oreo Jones - Highway Hypnosis
50

Really good, even though Oreo Jones sounds almost identical to Ceschi. Or is it good *because* of that? Hmm

Land of A Thousand Rappers - Vol. 1: Fall of The Pillars
50

Former Soul-Junk member Slo-Ro forms his own group where he does things that sound like stuff. Abstract raps and spoken word passages over very percussion/electronic driven production so varied it'll probably remind you of like 10 different artists by the time you're through with this. The interruptions from the occasional genre whatevers for interludes don't even feel like such because this album is inherently interruptive, so they help fill in its niche even more if anything. ... read more

Dreamy Meat Cleaver - Dreamy Meat Cleaver

Very obscure 667 adjacent project featuring some of the earliest babelfishh recordings which are, surprisingly, really good. I say surprisingly because while I am a huge babelfishh fan, I've always been lukewarm on his earlier albums (think Exit Lever) and how DIY to a fault the mixing/mastering was. His first verse on Unlisted sounds like it might very well have been recorded this decade. Straight out of No Man's Gospel type stuff. That's how good it is. Needless to say that ... read more
