“Hide your kids hide your wife. Klô Pelgag is gonna make you cry.”

Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs is an island/village in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec. It's hard to believe a place like this still exists in the modern world. An independent village with a population that's less than 100 people is unheard of in a first world country. Yet, its a place that feels so important in the grand scheme of things. It's untouched by the sin and perversion of the modern world. Pelgag's time on this island is what drives every song here.

From the theatrical pop banger "Umami" to the heartbreaking ballad "La maison jaune", Pelgag stays consistently fierce in her vocal delivery and playing. Even on the more stripped back cuts like "Soleil" the gentle walls of brass and strings stay up close in the mix to keep the listener in pelgag's fantasy world view on the island. She describes the nature and people of Notre-Dame in most of the lyrics The lyrics are not just limited to the island itself. “La fonte” is about her father’s death. I’m guessing this is something she thought about a lot on Notre-Dame.

She goes more into an electro baroque pop style on "Mélamine" and "Où vas-tu quand tu dors?" The synths sound alien in these later tracks. They thematically bring up ms. pelgag's nightmarish childhood visions of notre-dame. She doesn't let these preconceived ideas hold her back tho. But it doesn't mean that those ideas aren't there. They linger in the background of every song here. The sections of droney ambiance on some of these tracks show the possibility of everything going south. The chance that the haunting images of notre-dame might be real. By the end, it doesn’t happen. The island stays as it appears, superbly simple and innocent. The outro “Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs II” solidifies this with its transition from these same synths into some natural piano instrumentation.

Clarity and cold sweat are all I felt after finishing this masterpiece. Go listen to this ASAP. Buy It, Stream It, Marry It, Have Kids With It! Simply, Kengoji Approves With Every Lick of Sexual Frustration in My Soul!
