Swans - Cop

With one less bassist and one less drummer, you’d expect this album to be less heavy than Filth, but they’ve only managed to make it more heavy, and with the lyrical content, more sickening.

The band’s sound didn’t evolve much between the last album and this, but you can definitely tell the difference in sound between Filth and Cop, as Cop manages to be considerably more repetitive and harsh on the listener, which does lead to there being a slight decrease in quality depending what you’re wanting from the album, but is definitely a slight advance in their sound. Half Life seems like a warning in song form, with Michael singing “Don’t make a wrong move”, and the crushing guitars make it sound as dangerous as possible. Michael’s vocals on Why Hide are full of anguish in the second verse, he sounds genuinely distressed, even though all he’s doing is again and again asking “Why hide the lie?”. Sonically, the track sounds fairly similar to the previous track, Cop, which can be a problem on this record at points, but the memorable lyrics always help to differentiate song from song, and make them each unique. Your Property, which has lyrics that were later adapted into the SFTB track Yrp, and is definitely not anywhere near as good musically, but the lyrics fit with the more brutal sound of this song much more, with Michael “singing” about someone owning him, with an extremely fitting and extremely heavy bass. The title track of Cop is ironically more filthy than anything from Filth, with the lyrics just describing a cop abusing you in every way possible. When it says “designed to be played at maximum volume” on the packaging it really means it, because the louder this, the more brutal it sounds, and the better it gets.
