Seven years ago, Everything Everything won me over with the way their abstract lyrics discussed grand matters and issues without sounding cliché over interesting production. Sometimes you found them talking about global warming and deforestation, sometimes the subject was the West's foreign policy, other times how it bites them back with terrorism... Sure, they talked about those things, but their music (at least to me) was always as much about humans as their surroundings: How do we ... read more

It's not as bad as I expected but not good either. There are zero good hooks, an abundance of predictable lyrics, and overused tired vocal lines. Tootsie's isn't half bad, it's like an average Gunna song with a subpar hook. I think he needs some inspiration, some direction, a comeback. And quick.

Favorite track: Tootsie's

At 40, Lupe Fiasco sounds more mature and less bitter than many of his peers.

His age shows throughout the album, sometimes in the form of the dated pop-rap attempt AUTOBOTO, and mostly in the form of minimal, stripped-back songs with a story to tell that almost give me the same feeling I get from singer-songwriter music. You don't hear rap songs like MS. MURAL every day, and with PRECIOUS THINGS and KIOSK on the same album, that song is far from a sole highlight.

Give or Take's tiny and barren instrumentals are at their worst cheap, flat, and infested with outdated trap influence like a 2014 mixtape, and at their best uneventful, colorless, and quiet enough to let you focus on Giveon. They don't nearly match up to his vocal presence and vintage approach to R&B.

Giveon's debut is riddled with missteps like "Make You Mine" that sounds like an alternate universe Trey Songz cut or the Sam Smith interpolation on "For Tonight". ... read more

Cute and noisy, right up my alley.

Couldn't get into that first track but everything else is somewhere between good and unreal.
I'm taking it as my sign to start listening to Asian Glow's solo work.

On today's episode of self-inflicted ear torture, I looked at this thing's score and thought "it wasn't THAT bad" and listened to it for the first time in about ten years. Turns out it was much worse.

I literally skimmed through some of the tracks and I still caught some terrible bars in them. Not even one track has aged well.

Tolerable: Talkin' 2 Myself
