Conway the Machine - From King To A GOD

probably my favorite Griselda release this year so far. the beats are consistently exciting and unique, never really dragging or suffering from no-drum-itis. Conway, while far from the most charismatic or interesting rapper alive rn, displays a lot of versatility on these tracks that honestly took me by surprise. there's a lot of different sounds and styles on display here, it's not just your typical coke-rap Griselda joint. the trap-influenced Anza (with a fantastic Armani Caesar feature thank god), the thunderingly aggressive Juvenile Hell, and the jazzy Front Lines, which honestly sounds like Dos Monos might've produced it. it's still very much Griselda, it never completely leaves the style they're known for, but there's enough interesting and unique sounds here that make it really something special in their greater catalog.

it still suffers from some of the main issues i have with Griselda as a whole, though: firstly, they just... DO NOT know how to write good hooks. either the track doesnt have a hook, making it a pretty meandering, unevolved excursion, or the hook just.... sounds like shit. Lemon is obviously the biggest offender (LEMON SQUEEEEZZZZ). but honestly my biggest issue is just that Conway himself is the least interesting part of the whole record! beats slap, the features are all fantastic, but Conway's slow n deep flow just doesn't do it for me a lot of the time. he's outshined by his Griselda comrades on the obligatory group posse cut (Spurs 3), and just in general any track with a feature i'm more interested in the guest artists. he can hold his own fairly well, but once other voices are involved, his weaknesses are much more pronounced.

overall though, FKTG is exactly what i want from Griselda - an adventurous n diverse record that never falls into complacency. it doesnt feel like going through the motions like WSG's last couple records, it feels like Conway is really pushing himself as an artist. and that i can get behind!

FAVORITE - Juvenile Hell, Spurs 3, Front Lines, Seen Everything But Jesus, Dough & Damani
LEAST FAVORITE - Lemon (LEMON SQUEEEEZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
