Doja Cat - Scarlet

This truly is the "bread sandwich" album of the year. With all the drama and build-up around the album it severely under-delivered. Doja is trying to be edgy and hard on this album but fails miserably, it just feels very unauthentic.

I've heard some garbage beats with cringy lyrics in the past but often I believed that it would genuinely be what that artist would write, here I barely believed it (and looking at that list of writers, that seems to actually be the case).

Pitchfork is over-reacting (seriously, 1.6/10?!).
This album is definitely as if N.A.S.A took a shotgun, loaded it with all the artists they could load in, and unload it unto a selection of beats ranging from OK to catchy.
There is nothing incredible on here, and it is a bit too long, but it has some novelty in its weird collaborations and some catchy tracks.
Fall Out Boy - We Didn't Start The Fire

The lyrics read like they optimized the song for SEO.
Swans - The Beggar

A very impressive album once again, though I would not recommend it to someone as their first Swans album.
It's much slower, much more meditative. I found myself zoning out and being immersed much more often than some of their other records. More songs on here have a lot of repetition than previous albums, but in contrast to Leaving Meaning it also has the complexity and detail around it to back it up and not make it feel hollow.
I think the lack of explosive in your face moments or ... read more

Not a lot of standout moments, but very solid beginning to end.

Black Eyed Peas - The E.N.D.

A lot of discussion around this album and the Black Eyed Peas in general had me believing this is one of the worst albums of all time. I think that's quite the over-exaggerated. Yes it's incredibly stupid at times, but it can really fun with that stupidity. The best songs are when they embrace it and just create a bop, the worst songs are when they take themselves and their "message" too seriously. Some songs are genuinely enjoyable and some can be enjoyed ironically. Though the ... read more

As a drummer this not only hurts my ears, but also my soul.
Grizfolk - Waking Up the Giants

Sounds like an album of rejected Songfestival songs. Gets real tiring after a while.
Jessie Ware - That! Feels Good!

Calling it now, this is the most fun and sensual album of this year. Jessie Ware again delivers an amazing disco and dance album that has a bop for every single vibe on the dancefloor.
AJR - The Dumb Song

Hey, that's not bad!

Tell people you enjoy Frog on the Floor and Most Wanted Person in the United States, then see how much acceptance you get from the "tolerant" left.
Gorillaz - Cracker Island

I thought this album was going for a nice funky bassy sound based on the singles Cracker Island and New Gold, then the other singles dropped and my hype was kinda gone. Having listened the full album, The only other tracks that stood out were Oil and Silent Running, the rest are your standard Gorillaz-type pop songs. And while not bad, it's definitely not as fresh as it once was.

With how shortly this album followed after song machine and seeing that shitty album cover I already expected this ... read more

Thanks for dropping C'est Comme Ca as the last single to lower my expectations, in order to then exceed them with the full album.

Great songwriting, nice variation of instrumentation that I did not expect, interesting topics for songs, great performance. I also appreciated how the album didn't fire on all cylinders at all time, the dynamic between the energetic and quieter moments was very welcome.

Great vocalist, incredibly forgettable songs. No real good sticky hooks, no songs with some sort of depth to get into, nothing to really sink your teeth into. The parts that try to be provocative still feel very much safe and commercialized.
Everything put together, I'll probably forget this album in a day.
Jon Allen - Dead Man's Suit

While definitely not the most original folk-rock music, it is still a very well performed and fun album. Especially commendable is how natural the performance feels, nothing feels forced or over-the-top.
Suzan & Freek - Gedeeld Door Ons

Dutch mall pop music. Unoriginal in sound, but good performances. Lyrics do absolutely nothing to me, occassional good lines but mostly feels like they write a line and then go "Okay so what do we write to make it rhyme".

Bars written like Mad Libs
Beats that sound like they were made based on an FL-studio tutorial.
Energy even lower than Drake as of late.
So mid that it sucks any fun that's left out of it.
Yep, certified nothing-music

On silfang's review of Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
"Sometimes I can only describe this album as "emotional" since it somehow manages to move me through a whole range of emotions in such a short time. I think the most important aspect that causes that feeling is how intimate, personal and close it all sounds. Beautifully obtained through the fuzzy DIY production and quirky selection of instruments, combined with the personal but artistic/poetic lyrics. Makes you feel like you are sitting in a comfy chair in a warm living room with Jeff Mangum and the band while they play the album to you."
