the gradual self-realisation over the course of this collection of tracks captured even me. "arms unfolding" is amazing but in such an uncharacteristic manner. something so bleak and hypnotic and bare leads the way for even the most uppity of pop songs like "monster" which still have quirks that are unmistakably dodie. I think that's what separates most self-made tender indie pop from her's...... Dodie's captures a unique spirit that I wouldn't ever be able to mistake for another, each step of growth is hers and yet in the most esoteric lyrics about apple juice and peaches, for instance, I still feel like I've engaged with something truly intimate. this set of tracks doesn't need to reinvent the wheel for music in general, no. but there's a feeling by the end of forthright closing track "burned out" that maybe, maybe indeed, it marks a new discovery or step forward for dodie herself.
