This album's appeal boils down to little more than its outward aesthetics. There really isn't much going on here that we haven't heard before, either from Uzi or his contemporaries. That being said, those aesthetics-- both the spacey production and the thematic touches-- go a long way in making this album a solid, fun listen.
I do hope that, in future, Uzi embraces his weird ideas wholeheartedly. Feels a bit like wasted potential.

Prince's bravado and range of songwriting skill makes him perhaps one of the best possible choices for writing a musical's songs-- and I love the dramatic direction that this task drove Prince in. The emotional texture of this album is vast, each song feels so gargantuan. The anthemic sing-along of Take Me With U-- the tender, building flirtatiousness of The Beautiful Ones-- that cinematic tension on I Would Die 4 U... And of course, the legendary closer of Purple Rain.

I got to see them live in a small Tokyo venue, so much fun. Yoyoyoshie (lead guitar) complimented my New Order shirt after the show. (after stagediving on me)
This album wanders, wanders fearlessly. Now and again it wanders into places I don't like, but I think that's natural for such an uncensored creative effort.
Tracks that I like less others seem to drool over, and some of my favorites seem less discussed. (Based on my broad impressions of this album's reception.)
