Here it is ladies and gentlemen, the Album of the Year, with over seven months to go in 2022. Every other album in 2022 will have to settle for participation ribbons as far as I'm concerned. Taut, evocative and emotionally rich, "Preacher's Daughter" is a powerful journey beautifully realized by Ethel Cain who has made an era defining statement here. "A House in Nebraska" about a lover who disappears is the best song not to appear on Joni Mitchell's Blue. "Family Tree" and "Hard Times" are detailed examinations of rural living and "Gibson Girl" is probably the best Lana Del Rey song that Lana Del Rey didn't make, with its sexually blunt lyrics and theme of emotionally vulnerability that reverberates throughout the entire record. Every minutiae of this record just kills, from Cain's vocals that go from introspective to operatic, to the instrumentals that are worthy of Broadway in their epic theatricality, it just does not make a wrong move once. This is a must-hear masterpiece.
