What makes an album age well? Is it the popularity of the artist or the quality of the music within? Whenever I hand an album the ultimate score, it isn't something I take lightly. I choose to leave them for only those records that are exclusively integral to my life and identity as a person. The most iconic album of all time? It's a close match between this and Abbey Road, however, when it comes to personal impact, Dark Side is unbeatable. Meddle is everything Atom Heart Mother is and isn't. It's gorgeous musically and masterful texturally. It's cohesive yet strikingly progressive, capturing your attention and sweeping you off of your feet until it carries you through a void so deep and revelatory that I'd believe anyone who said they came out the other side with a new perspective on life.

If previous albums were Floyd dabbling their toes into the shallow end of progressive rock, Atom Heart... was when Floyd dived into the deep end of the pool. Even knowing what the band were about to do, this record is still very peculiar, whether it's the cinematic lunacy of its opening title track or the pastoral epic of a man enjoying a hearty breakfast (a song that is both simultaneously gross and beautiful to me).
