A surprising album, to say the least. This feels like Taylor Swift maturing. Here, she subverts her poppy reputation, in favour of a more unique and indie sound. She does this to a level of great success. There were no tracks that I disliked. The entire album is consistently good both lyrically and sonically.
One thing that I didn't expect, was Swift's eloquence with her lyrics. The imagery used across the album is sincere and vivid, pulling you into the album and making you listen to her ... read more
I wasn't too impressed with this. I don't mind it but it just doesn't work for me. Some tracks are great, however. L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N. is the clear strongest of the tracks.
Where this record fails is the vocal style can get quite annoying by the time you get past halfway. It feels the lyrics are whimpered out, rather than sung. Another issue is that a few tracks drag on for too long, bordering on overstaying their welcome. This drags down the album as it just feels like a lot of waiting for ... read more
A very middling eponymous record.
Blossoms provide some pleasant tracks and nice (and somewhat generic) lyrics. The passion is there, and it's clear this album is one they care about, but there's nothing truly extraordinary.
The only standouts I can think of are Charlemagne and Getaway. These are the only songs that anyone listening for the first time would find identifiable when thinking back.
For their eponymous record, it honestly does what it says on the tin. It's basically what ... read more
Possibly Elbow's most unique record. The environment feels entirely different to anything else they've done. The only real comparison I can make is to their first LP 'Asleep in the Back'.
This album is very solid. It's got some obvious standouts ("My Sad Captains" and "Fly Boy Blue / Lunette") which help this record reach outside the void of mediocrity. I enjoy the feel of this record and the imagery it presents, but it doesn't quite reach the heights of their other work. ... read more
A decent, if not average record.
For such a highly acclaimed record, there's not much to it. There are some nice riffs (Do I Wanna Know, R U Mine?) which make tracks memorable and hummable, but lyrically there's not much substance. It's a shame. There are some great tracks (Mad Sounds, Snap Out Of It and Knee Socks) that surrounded with more varied and interesting themes could make this album work a lot better.
My other problem is the lack of cohesion present on this project. They're ... read more
