Chelsea Wolfe - Abyss

I like this album about as much as her debut, though for very different reasons. Her debut had a certain charm to it, that Chelsea used to her advantage. The charm being that her anonymity added to the mysterious, dark, haunting aesthetic of the album. It sounded like a timepiece, of which I imagine was discovered in the same way the Jumanji board game was found in the movie. A kid is walking and hears a dark, pounding drum that gets louder the closer he gets to the album. He finds the album, listens to it and boom - Apocalypsis. However, Chelsea can only use that trick once. The downside to artists that create music like this is that the more well-known they get, the more the mystery behind them disappears. And mystery plays a large part in Chelsea's music. Honestly. the only group I can think of that is still able to seem obscure while being well-known is Swans.

Keeping her sound interesting, Chelsea adds a more gritty approach to the percussion on the album, while occasionally adding synth-based swells that go over pretty well. Most of the album is pretty sweet, although its lows are what really keep it from being fantastic for me. Some of the "dark, brooding"ness of the album comes off as really heavy-handed, borderline cringy. Carrion Flowers is the biggest instance of this, a song of which I honestly never want to hear again. However, these rare cringy moments aside, this album is complex, varied, and really aesthetically powerful.
