HMLTD - West of Eden

If you take a look at different mediums that recommend other artists similar to HMLTD, you get the sense that the act is hard to categorize. On this website acts like Weyes Blood and Mitski are mentioned, whereas on Spotify bands like Shame, Idles and Viagra Boys are suggested. This is quite obviously a strange juxtaposition, but I would argue HMLTD do something completely different from arguably either of these comparisons on their debut record West of Eden.

From right out of the gate, HMLTD take their post-punk influence and add an artful style that feels unique to them. Loaded has a southern-like guitar riff, The Ballad of Calamity James is folk and western in its sound, To the Door has a surf groove that cannot be matched, and Mikey's Song starts with a catchy synth track and blends into a groovy bass line over a forward drum kick. Just judging by the opening few tracks, it's clear to the listener that they are getting something different from song to song yet HMLTD deliver on each of these different styles and makes them their own. Even music boxes and piano tones find their way into the album on Joanna.

The whole album is varied and begs to be listened to on multiple occasions. If you can somehow observe all the moving parts of this album it would have to be accomplished over periods of time. It gives West of Eden plenty of replay value for the rest of the year and beyond, makes for a complex listening experience, and gives HMLTD the kind of momentum to make them one of the most interesting acts to watch going into the 2020s.
