Shabaka and the Ancestors - We Are Sent Here By History

If you're a fan of the sound of modern jazz acts Sons of Kemet and The Comet is Coming, this collection of jazz songs is a guaranteed win given the front-man saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings who is associated with all three acts. It's a constantly shifting and spiritual adventure that feels far more traditional than the other two acts Hutchings is involved with, which are often heavily experimental and fall more within the terriroty of nu jazz.

Shabaka and the Ancestors is guided so heavily by the incredible saxophone work, but blends brilliant percussion and bass lines into the mix as well as brief vocal incorporation. The Afro-jazz styles are something I'm more unfamiliar with personally, only having become interested in jazz over the last couple years, but the influence of an artist like Pharaoh Sanders is readily apparent.

The more you listen to this dense and atmospheric album, the more you are able to either soak in the tones or simply allow them to exist in the airwaves. After giving the album both a focused listen as well as a passive listen, I can safely attest that both are successful, a generally huge positive I see in jazz music overall. It gives this album infinite replayability given its ability to exist in different settings and fit the mood.

Shabaka Hutchings is a surefire standout in jazz today, and this ensemble is yet another pristine example of that very talent and adventurous style he brings to the genre; the kind of person this genre needs more than perhaps ever.
