Klô Pelgag - Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs

Language barriers be damned, Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs is a phenomenally adventurous, lush, and even sometimes haunting album from the French-speaking Klô Pelgag. Without having a lot of background on what to expect, I couldn't have been more enthralled with the end result.

Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs is such an emotively powerful album that understanding what is being said isn't necessary to feel the artistic expression. Umami is an up-tempo, pop-centric song juxtaposed with J'aurai les cheveux longs, which is a longing yet hopeful piano focused track that features brimming strings over top. À l'ombre des cyprès is so rich that it makes you want to dance as you take in the glistening instrumentation.

These songs, among others, express everything in their tonal qualities. The mood of any given song is conveyed through the voice of Klô Pelgag, which pairs precisely with whatever accompanying instrumentation that comes along. It's a sonic journey into a fairy-tale land of cinematic soundscapes and jovial tones.

For anyone who can enjoy the whimsical sound that an artist like Joanna Newsom can craft, Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs should be a must listen before we end the half point of the year. It is the kind of album that could and absolutely should cross over to a Western listener and far reaching beyond, simply for its emotive power and tremendous arrangements.
