Let's be real. Most of the hate this album and artist get are from pretentious and pedantic genre-whores at best and sexists at worst. If you take any genre-related expectations out of the equation, this is a pretty decent album. The folk and atmospheric elements work really well when contrasting with the metal overtones; the main issue would be that this is not prevalent enough. Absolutely Drake's peak. After listening to some more recent releases, it'd be hard to believe that Drake can muster being anything but a complete bore with his vocal delivery, but this mixtape proves he can. The balance between energetic tracks and calmer tracks is perfection, and every track flows together due to the production that creates a flawless nighttime atmosphere. The production is amazing, the features mesh wonderfully, the writing is masterful. There are countless elements to love about this album. Jamila Woods demonstrated her knowledge of history while transforming it into her own style. Some areas feel a bit repetitive, but the album is overall a slice of heaven.

Many artists make music with the intention of having it be listened to as a full album, but Solange takes that philosophy to a whole new level on When I Get Home. All of the tracks flow so seamlessly that it feels like one big journey as opposed to several fragments that work together. It's certainly an experience where you have to be in a certain mood to digest it, but when you are, it's pure joy.
