KSI - Dissimulation

Am I really surprised that this is as bad as it is? Not really, I expected this.

One of the biggest YouTubers in the world KSI is no stranger to making music, however he is a stranger to making good music. His attempt at starting a solo career as an artist will probably go as well as you'd expect because we all know whatever music comes out of the YouTube sphere, more specifically the popular side of YouTube, is just the epitome of capitalisation. From the production end of things this album is very clean, soulless, polished and pretty expensive sounding, for the most part the aggressive and hard instrumentals work for what they are, just fun and carefree.

Performance wise though JJ has some pros and cons as a performer, pros being that he has a pretty decent flow most of the time, his normal voice is pretty good when he goes for a more aggressive tone and he can fit the banger instrumentals well, the cons however is another story. JJ tries his hand at some melodic moments and I'm putting this bluntly, KSI trying to be melodic is genuinely terrible, obviously with how deep and flat his vocals are he'd have to resort to using autotune but even when it's applied it still sounds really bad, the tone of the album is kinda samey with a lot of tracks being very derivative of one another bar KIlla Killa which is one of the only and hopefully last Dancehall cut JJ attempts.

Lyrics wise, this album doesn't have much to offer bar the final track Millions which has some form of emotional potency to it, the rest is more braggadocios if anything else, there's some awful one-liners and there's some simple yet clever ones too, as a cohesive unit it's just pretty bland and not at all that interesting. The features are probably some of the more popular and well known that money could buy, Rick Ross, Lil Baby, Trippie Redd, Lil Pump, Smokepurpp, Jeremiah etc. The features are pretty calculated to JJ's advantage considering how popular a lot of them are but performance wise it's a mixed bag, we get some great features like Trippie Redd, Lil Pump and Smokepurpp, some passable features like Jeremiah, Aiyana-Lee and Swarmz and some really bad features from Lil Baby and Rick Ross.

All in all this record is pretty soulless, it's bad and doesn't really showcase KSI having much talent outside of flows. I'm hoping to see some form of artistic progression for JJ, his fans will eat this up for sure but as of right now if he continues to go on this path of making forgettable and run of the mill rap then I guess there isn't much hope in my opinion.

Best Tracks: Poppin, Millions and Bad Lil Vibe

Worst Track: Houdini and Down Like That
