Suffocation - Pierced from Within

Very much a step-up from the debut. Really love how gnarly it is, but I appreciate how much clearer and more refined the sound is while still keeping the edge.

Inside of me are two wolves:

One wants me to appreciate this for how uncompromising, raw and harsh it is. How it is an unfiltered expression of cold sadness, and how much of a grand set piece it is in representing that idea.

The other one doesn't care and really wants to say that this fucking sucks.

Look, I'm no stranger to harsh, noisy black metal. Am I an expert of the genre? No, but I've had my fair fill, and I think I'm, able to articulate what I do and don't ... read more

Deafheaven - KEXP Sessions

Picked this up today during Record Store Day. It's four of the best songs off of Lonely People with Power played live in a studio.

It's as great as you think it is, and one of the best things I picked up today.

I think I'm just going to have to concede here and say this really didn't work for me like I hoped it would.

I really do enjoy Black One, as it is the one (hehe) and only time a drone metal album has worked for me, as that project truly did feel huge and menacing, but also distinct and engaging. I haven't been able to reach that same feeling with any other album by this band, as each project just feels like a more boring version of Black One.

I'm hesitating to call this ... read more

Jessie Ware - Superbloom

Very lush record focused on love and sensual feelings.

It doesn't quite have me ascending like That! Fells Good! or What's Your Pleasure, but it's still really darn good.

Krallice - Years Past Matter
80

The song lengths are a bit overkill, especially the last song. First time I've ever sat through a black metal song that long before.

Still, it's a pretty damn good album. I really appreciate how it still has that black metal vibe (raw, dark and brooding) but it doesn't sound like complete ass.

Instruments are mixed really well, allowing you to really hear how awesome the performances and writing is on here. It's dynamic and tasteful, something you really don't see so ... read more

Immolation - Descent

Pretty consistently good throughout with some highlights here and there. Really enjoy how deep and imposing the vocals are.

While it didn't do too much for me, there were some pretty spectacular highlights I did enjoy a lot. Also, the fact these fellas have made 12 albums over the course of 30 years and are still this solid is insane.

If you have any other recommendations by these fellas, feel free to send them over.

Neurosis - Times of Grace

Let this one sit a bit longer and now I have more to say on it. This is really damn great.

It really is an album that takes a lot of time to digest, as it's focused on creating this thick, crushing atmosphere. Yeah, it's a bit more streamlined than Through Silver In Blood, but this still took a bit before I really began to describe that's why I like it so much.

Yeah, it's very long-winded and I'm still unsure if I love this or Through Silver In Blood more, but this is ... read more

Archspire - Too Fast to Die
80

I've always liked Archspire, but there was something keeping me completely being into what they did. I am extremely picky with my tech death, as a lot of bands tend to fall into a habit of sounding so clean, so overproduced that it sounds robotic, and not in a good way.

Archspire fell into that camp for me as well. However, Too Fast to Die still has that sound you expect from the band but refined in a way that sounds better and more human than before.

A big reason for that is that the ... read more

Elder - Reflections of a Floating World

It's very long-winded, but damn it, it's really good. Sanctuary was a song that flew by and is one of the best songs I've heard in this genre.

I do find that it slowly loses steam as it goes on, like I don't think it needs to be as long as it. However, there is a lot here that I did love, and that first half of the album is so damn good, it's worth the trip.

Civerous - Maze Envy
85

Coming back to this one after getting used to this genre more, and yeah, it rips.

I certainly enjoyed it when I first listened to it, but I didn't appreciate how thick, heavy and WEIRD this thing is. There is a lot of genre blending going on here that I enjoy so much more now than I did when I first heard this.

Labyrinth Charm is probably my favorite song on here. I love how it goes from a thick, heavy banger, to a dissonant black metal piece, and then ending on a serene, longing ... read more

beabadoobee - This Is How Tomorrow Moves

Really fantastic album I loved coming back to. Love the combination of chill, soothing ballads and head bopping bangers.

Beaches is the main highlight, but there is plenty to love here. Real surprised this is as low as it is on the user score, as I know a lot of peeps would eat this shit up.

There was a time I went to a Halloween party and Raining Blood was playing and everyone lost their shit in excitement. All of a sudden, some douchebag went to the laptop that was streaming the music and skipped it. That guy is a fucking bitch and should be ashamed of himself.

I really don't think this album should be changed in any way. Is it perfect? No, but I find that it still holds up as one of the best thrash albums ever made, and one of the best metal albums ever made.

RAYE - THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE.

It's very much a kitchen sink album, where a whole lot of ideas are thrown in and mixed together. That isn't inherently a bad thing, there are plenty of artists and albums I enjoy that do this sort of genre blending.

However, I will say this didn't really work for me. It's definitely a case of a jack of all trades, master of none. If she stuck to a single sound or concept, I think I would have found much more enjoyment here.

I hesitate to call any of this bad, because ... read more

Pretty much a better version of Vol. I. it's wacky, zany and oh so groovy. It really is a fun time, and something that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

"@andrewa1975 Idk. I know some people who have listened to a lot more music than me and still found a lot of enjoyment in this album. It really boils down to what you value the most in music. I'm real picky with pop and electronic albums, but some people may not be so picky and can see past the flaws this album may have. That's what I really like about media discussion, as it would be pretty boring if everyone loved the same thing, so hearing what others have to say and what they see in a work of art is what makes sites like these great."

On Goober1234's review of Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
"I think a lot more people rate songs lower due to hearing them a lot is more common that you think. Doechii's Anxiety and All I Want for Christmas Is You are two songs that get a lot of shit, and the main reason for that is because of how overplayed they are. However, I think pointing this out with big hit classics is also fair and really isn't talked about enough. Like I love Bohemian Rhapsody, but I'm sure if I surrounded myself with theater kids who played this non-stop I would hate it and myself as well."
