I Don’t Have A Friend retains the (at times) half-baked nature of their previous releases, but has a bit more staying power. i come back more to this record compared to "Hey Won’t Somebody".
i feel like this album goes on for a bit too long at times, and also seems half-baked or amateurish at times. however, many of the tracks remain enjoyable listens, and the album makes for good pre-SILY plunderphonics
the "must-hear" label is indeed kinda needed! BoC’s 4th album is indeed a very good nod to the days of strange old film soundtracks with synthesizers (reminiscent of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop or Wendy Carlos imo), with a bit of the dusty atmosphere they are famous for. the album has (at least in my opinion) decided to put more of an emphasis on the synth work compared to perc, which is no surprise when you listen to the stuff BoC mentioned as influences. still, even (or maybe ... read more
a landmark release in the ambient techno / idm genres, saw 85-92 delivers beautiful synth work and distinctive drum programming, with some cheesy 80s reverb to boot. it’s no doubt an amazing album, and one of the greatest electronic releases, period.
