An art rock album with sax and a lot of atmosphere? Of course I was gonna love this thing
One of those songs where you keep thinking its overrated until you listen to it and you suddenly remember why its so good.
deleted the old review bc it sucked so now I might make a new one and hopefully that one won't suck as much
All I'm gonna say to this is just this has bangers upon bangers upon bangers holy shit
apologies for sounding like a dump more than anything but honestly coming back to listening to this makes me wanna write about it so idk it is what it is ig?
This song perfectly captures the feeling of being stuck in a ditch, yet not having the emotion to send it out to others. I wouldn't necessarily say this song is outright devastating, in the sense that it paints it with a seemingly soft figure, almost as if its in an act of acceptance in a sense. I think another song that best ... read more
I said I would keep it brief with this one but ig I was wrong
Some rap songs is one of the most despondent things I've ever heard. With beats that sound like a broken record that sound more beat up the more you listen to it, and earl's usually detailed writing adds a certain mystique to it. It's simultaneously comforting and claustrophobic, like a bedroom you got comfortable with yet really wanna get out of. But at the same time, there are cracks at the concrete walls that show ... read more
Excuse me I didn't know you had that in you
So let me get this straight, Miley Cyrus went from having one of the most mi pop albums of the decade to one of the most eccentric and sonically strange?! In two years no less. The production feels like a blend of the textural grandiosity that a prog act might pick up on and some disco (at least that's what I think it might be but it may as well be just grandiose synthpop), especially in the back half of the record. Not to mention her ... read more
Shit is as gritty as the cover
One of the most uniquely textured pop albums I've heard this year (tbf I'm gonna listen to the new miley cyrus later), it's short but can really pack a punch with a sonic palette akin to some trip hop acts like portishead, to gritty and glitchy synthpop. I think the vocals are pretty mixed in with the instrumentals sometimes, but honestly I think it kinda fits with the whole tone of the record. It's pretty consistent all-throughout and ... read more
The band really delivered in the last chapter
I'm pretty sure everyone knows how massively varied the Swans discography is, yk spanning 42ish years at the time of this recording with massive lineup changes, a break-up and return, and such. And with this album being the final chapter to what I call the "colossal era" of the band, I would say they ended off things with a soft but nauseating bang.
This album has that layer of heavy density that I feel was a nice change of pace to ... read more
Hiphop so soulful it came to life
This has been one of the most lively and exciting things I've ever experienced form a hip-hop album this year. The production reads to me as early Kanye if he abused the fact that you can basically have an infinite amount tracks thanks to modern DAWs. It's so detailed to the point where I can't tell if some parts are live instruments or parts of the sample, yet it's so full and clear it just elevates the soul. Another thing I really ... read more
I sort of equal the feeling this album gives as like the soundtrack to a checkpoint area from a souls game
I'm too tired (or maybe too lazy idk I can't tell the difference) to do a full on breakdown of the complicated history and legacy of this somewhat straightforward album. It's literally just his voice and an acoustic guitar with a bit of piano on the title track. But it creates this effect where it feels like time just stops and all the noise seems to just quiet down, at ... read more
I guess I found my rnb of the year in may
Basically, this album combines the sounds of 90s rnb with the hazy synths of the silent hill 2 soundtrack, to the sometimes hazy sometimes hard but often manipulated drums that come with trip hop to turn it into 30 mins of chill, more-so laid back rnb bangers. While yes, the songs are a bit short, for the most part they make up with memorable choruses, and more importantly, solid production that made me genuinely lost at points because of this sound ... read more
I kinda expected what's to come but at the same time like what the fuck is this thing
As someone who hasn't done any album reviews in quite a while, this is certainly NOT the album to bump for the first time, in one sitting no less. And yet here we are taking notes of whatever I feel on this thing.
Honestly for the whole hour this piece has left me saying "what the fuck" like 20 times listening to it, for good and for I guess other reasons, mainly because from parts really ... read more
This sounds like it was made for a soundtrack to a documentary about decaying cities, it practically is the word "disintegration" in song form. Probably one of, if not the best song of the decade so far.
They made something more maximalist and more jazzy with this one and jesus I don't know if this is better than zig zag or not but still what the actual fuck.
