Fifty years have passed since Tom Waits first brought his talent of writing albums to listeners around the world. It's a strong debut, one that is well instrumented even if sometimes a bit hokey and a little too American, as in corny and unaware. Feels like such harsh words to be describing some of the inoffensive deep cuts, considering they're nestled next to some of his best and most celebrated work to date with tracks like Martha and I Hope I Don't Fall in Love With You. Yea uhhhhhh, it's not quite off the deep end, but I feel like we might be getting there. I guess this is one of the expected routes a band solely writing about government skepticism would eventually evolve into. This end-of-the-world 2012 stuff was pretty wild wasn't it? I just hope this isn't an omen for thematic material after this, because even at it's best it can be hard not to cringe at. If you know, you know. Some of these tracks are some of the best the 00s pop culture disaster had to offer. SexyBack, My Love, Lovestoned, What Goes Around..., and Summer Love all deserve their own praise, and even the opening track as well. But there are moments here that genuinely feel like I could confuse them for The Lonely Island tracks, or some bullshit he would do on SNL.
