The magic of Björk is her vocals feel necessary instead of indulgent. Her music requires powerful explosions of her voice because there is no other way to get the meaning across. Volta is the only album that teeters on becoming gimmicky, Björk shouting for the sake of being dramatic. Sometimes the results are still amazing, 'Innocence' is a wonderful track that I find super fun and 'Wanderlust' is a total blast. It is songs like, 'Declare Independence' that I can't help but cringe a little bit. There is something that doesn't click for me; the music doesn't transcend into something more. I don't hate Volta, but it is the only Björk album that feels lengthy to me.
HOWEVER, this is probably my favorite artistic packaging of any Bjork record. I love vibrant colors and strange tribalism of this album. Björk on a bad day is still working on all cylinders.
