"pop 2" - blame it on the features.
"please get out of my head" - ALMA, out of my head
`
while pop 2's production is a natural and mostly successful evolution from the synthpop/bubblegun bass fusion of number 1 angel, i rarely see it mentioned just how horrendous nearly the bulk of this project's features are. some songs contain two nauseatingly bad features together... like both out of my head and i got it.
charli xcx hasn't evolved lyrically or vocally enough to save any song here, and of the two solo cuts this mixtape gives, only one is listenable (and also one of the best songs here.) apart from 'track 10' and 'backseat,' this album is entirely at the whims of its feature spots. i exclude 'backseat' since its feature is great but the production is a fucking drag.
caroline polachek and charli xcx perform beautifully together on 'tears', which comes with one of the most driving choruses on the album, with a performance already passionate enough without charli xcx shrieking in the background. while not my favorite song on the mixtape, 'femmebot' rightfully earns its place as a fan favorite... EASYFUN's production gives this song the sound of classic PC music with the added levity of a semi-decent vocalist. the features are good too.
more middling is 'unlock it', which demonstrates just how badly the features can kill this album. no matter how good a vocalist kim petras is or the catchiness of this chorus, jay park is khh old guard dog shit that doesn't belong on this song. tove lo, pabllo vittar, jay park; this comes to a head with whoever the fuck tommy cash is, an estonian rapper who apparently hadn't found his voice at this point, given this is pathetic compared to his appearance on 100 gecs' tree of clues. apart from requiring a renaming of 'track 10,' nothing would be lost by cutting out 'delicious.' pop 2 deserved far less of these song-ruining performances.
`
pop 2 feels: like the glossy, polished glass dome that encases a rotting dystopia.
every charli xcx project will help you with both heartbreak, and falling in love again. 'out of my head,' 'tears,' 'femmebot, 'track 10.'
