Although I'm a big fan of the hardcore genre, I hadn't ever listened to Fucked Up but had always seen that they are commonly critically acclaimed. David Comes To Life is an almost 80-minute narrative concept album that doesn't feel hardcore; more commonly feeling like post-hardcore, emo, and even pop punk (if you disregard the vocals). Due to its long duration, the record does feel like it outstays its welcome and I did switch off (a lot) towards the end.
I do recognise the ambition to create a complex narrative with a genre like hardcore but I found that too many of the songs fell a little bit flat unless they had something either lyrically great or unique sonically about them. A good example of this was my favourite song from the album, The Other Shoe. I reckon on repeat listens that David Comes To Life may grow on me but I'm not in a particular hurry to listen to it again.
