AOTY 2023

Exociety Discography Dive

Hi!

This is a cool little project that I’ve decided to take on starting today (11/16/21). I figured it would be cool to get into internet detective mode and learn a little bit of the background/history behind the group, as well as listen to and rate a bunch of music that I like. ^^

Given the size of their discography (6 artists across 9 years), I’ll probably be skipping some albums, so this list is a catalog with all the ratings and comments on each project in chronological order.

Feel free to comment if I forget something or mess something up :)

Airospace - The Devil & His Mistress

Promising start for Airospace, love the emotion he has on these tracks, but the production is just too skeletal and a lot of the lyrics about women feel very incel-ish to me. Granted, from what I can gather he was dealing with a lot of mental issues at the time, and this is certainly still a commendable effort for his first project, just not one I would come back to.
Rav - B-Sides & Rarities Vol. 1 [2008-2012]

I guess I'm in the minority here but this thing is seriously impressive? Sure, it's inconsistent, but songs like single second, Get Mine, LISTEN! and Ego Drive have aged really well and are standouts in this early part of his discography. Also he raps over a Giant Steps sample on I Just Do Me?

Overall this one has a really well curated vibe and while it may not hit the highs of Hyperkinesis it is still certainly worth checking out if you've gone through a lot of Rav's other releases.
Airospace - 戦場ヶ原 ひたぎ [vol. II]

First truly great project from a member of Exo. Airospace has so much personality on here and the production (courtesy of Mndsgn, Munoz and even FlyLo) is some of the most immersive I've heard on a mixtape, ever. Absolute gem, check this one out please!
Rav - Vol. 5.5

Probably the best b-sides entry? A lot of deep catalog gems such as Lost Pterodactyls, Lonely Photons, Moon Landings, and of course Kumbaya. It's pretty trim at 11 tracks and it feels a lot more fleshed out than most of the other volumes, and the vibe he curates on here is cozy and intimate in a way that you can only get on a b-sides comp. Essential Rav listen in my opinion.
Airospace - 羽川 翼 [ hanekawa ]

This cover art is ... something, but the songs are great smoky, warm jazz rap joints with dark undertones. Perfect project for a late night.
Airospace - AZALEA

Airospace meets boom-bap. Starts out a little bit slow, but damn the midsection is fire. Some of his best material on here, really slept on.
