GOOD (DAY OF DRONE #05)

Tim Hecker's 2001 debut is a strong entrance into the world of music. It's very expansive and atmospheric, and despite its numerous flaws, it's still worth a listen. It's a very solid listening experience. I would suggest this album to people who have never listened to Hecker's work before, since it's a fairly accessible ambient album and his discography would just get better from here on out. Speaking of which, I don't really see any reason why I would listen to this ... read more

I HAVE A CONFESSION TO MAKE (DAY OF DRONE #04)

I've been on albumoftheyear.org for a good while now. It's the place I consider home, and I've met lots of great people here. Some of those people I talk to on a regular basis, and some I only occasionally share interactions with. Nonetheless, I appreciate the opportunity to have met each and every one of you, whether we're on a first-name basis or not. And that is precisely why this hurts me so much more than it hurts you--I care for you, and I ... read more

GREAT (DAY OF DRONE #03)

Drone metal monsters Boris and Sunn O))) come together to create a fantastic album on Altar. I honestly can't tell whether or not I like this more than the last album, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's Love is a Stream, so I decided to just give it the same score. I feel like this is definitely more of a Boris album than a Sunn O))) album, mainly because despite the slug-paced tempos, Altar is a goddamn speed metal album in comparison to anything Sunn O))) has ever done. Still, if ... read more

GREAT (DAY OF DRONE #02)

From the very first second of Love is a Stream, you already know what you're up for--a colorful, bright drone album with lots of shoegazey textures and atmosphere. Back in the beginning of December 2019 during THE DAY OF NOISE, @knewnie brought up the idea of a genre called "noisegaze" in reference to Hypnoise by Hermann Holsgr, and I couldn't think of a better album to apply that hypothetical descriptor to. If you're interested, you should be; it sounds a ... read more

PHENOMENAL (DAY OF DRONE #01)

Just one album in and we've already struck gold. The debut studio album by Nivhek--AKA Grouper--is either a double album or a two track long record depending on the way you look at it. Technically it's comprised of two songs, but they're both long enough to be entire albums anyway. The first half is called After its own death, which is significantly longer than the second half, Walking in a spiral towards the house. Both of these sections of the album are ... read more

What album do you think would be the perfect anthem to THE END OF THE WORLD?

I know I'm late, but I'd probably have to go with Pink Floyd's performance of Echoes in their performance at Pompeii. The original studio version is already one of my favourite PF songs of all time, but there's something about that song's sound during that performance which makes it so much better. Hell, the entire set list is so much better in that album. I would also say that Nirvana's About A Girl in their Unplugged album deserves a mention. I've never been too big on the studio version of that song, but the version on Unplugged is just so beautiful and iconic that it makes me wonder what other songs on Bleach I could've liked more had they done another acoustic record.

For the live recording thing, I'd have to go with Long season. I apologize for the basic pick
