Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
95
Gorrilaz at their most, consistent, experimental and finely tuned. Plastic Beach is just a delight of a record, so sonically fun and bouncy, yet so thematic and engaging in its lyrics, thats its arguably impossible to hate.
Jam-packed with cute, fuzzy synths, with synth leads so undeniably catchy, that often times its easier to remember the songs by the synth leads or the instrumentals. Thats not to throw any shade to the vocals whatsoever though. With an array of guest features alongside ... read more
King Krule - Man Alive!
95
Archy Ivan Marshall, most commonly known by his musical alias, King Krule. Has returned with possibly his most barren, melancholic and sobering project.
Man Alive! Is a shuddersome, apprehensive record that does not hold back in giving the listener a lesson in what feeling a true depressive state of mind feels like. Sluggish in the best way, everything on this album feels a little more stripped back than King Krule's previous efforts, putting Archy's vocals and songwriting front and center. ... read more
Gao The Arsonist - OUR BONES ARE ARTIFACTS
96
Now, this rating may seem a little extreme for an artist fresh off his roots and whos relatively unknown, but hear me out.
OUR BONES ARE ARTIFACTS is probably one of the best rap albums if not the best rap album of the year.
Short and concise, Gao's 2022 experimental "sludge-rap" album is one that holds back no punches. With eerie production, fantastic, scathing bars which put to question many of societies ills, and an aesthetic like no other. Gao The Arsonist brings his artistic ... read more
Downy - 第七作品集『無題』
96
Where to get started with this record.
downy's post-rock, math rock blend 第七作品集『無題』(Mudai 7) is a skull splitting, life taking album that entrances the viewer with some of the most existential sounds in recent memory. The best part is, downy doesn't have to be loud or angry to acheive this. Mudai 7 manages to convey this heart-stopping feeling of true, honest to god dread by building a sonic landscape like none other. Every single riff, drum line and vocal note that hits the ... read more
MF DOOM - MM.. FOOD
96
DOOM does it again.
MM.. FOOD sees MF DOOM bring his catchiest songs to date, and whilst Madvillany may be the fan favorite, this one is easily the one with the tightest overall sound and experience. This album is simply a Hip-Hop experience that is few and far between. Where DOOM is at his most confident, funniest, wittiest and most laid back, and in my opinion, thats just what we needed from the Masked MC. All the one liners and punchlines land. All the production pulls through to create a ... read more
