A major change to his second record. Prince wiped out the disco elements to replace them with a cooler and more focused production. The funk became more artificial almost stripped down to the necessary skeleton with more synthesizers involved. His songwriting is exceptionally good almost like a zen-like concentrating on only the most basic moves necessary to support the feelings and ideas behind each composition. Lots of references to other genres already in place (like Beach Boys, Jazz, Wave , Soul .......) but implemented so subtle they never get in the way of the main sound of this record. It´s mono-thematic concerning the message and he was looking for scandals to stand out of the crowd (Sister) but that´s just promotion. This record is flawless containing some of his best songs up to that day (Dirty Mind, Head, Uptown, When you were mine, Sister) Head is my favorite because it´s funk is musically explicit (never mind the lyrics), and Lisa shows up for backing vocals. In case you don´t overstand what I refer to by musically explicit maybe you listen to Head, perhaps we agree.
Party Up!
