About as good as it gets when it comes to soul. Genre defining album. One woman is somewhat lacking compared to everything else, but then again everything else is perfect. And also, fuck robert christigau
It’s surely their best work. This things sound is so recognizable that if you play a single second of any song on here I could probably guess it on first listen. Kinda falls off from an emotional perspective on the last few tracks but the majority of this project is un-fuck-withable in the grunge genre.
I had to go back in fourth in my head a little bit about whether or not I think this album is perfect, then I realized there isn’t even a split second of imperfection here. It’s also just a personal favorite of mine, like top 10 all time and it’s only a year old.
RIP Richey Edwards. Songwriting and performances are just shy of perfect. James Dean Bradfield has maybe the most impactful voice in the punk genre, at least on this thing. Not objectively perfect, but EASILY an all time favorite for me.
I have no fucking clue how this isn’t more widely discussed as one of the greatest hip hop albums ever. This edges out Stankonia and The Infamous for me as my favorite hip hop duo album ever.
Maybe my favorite punk record ever. This album helped and still helps me so much to this day. The title of this thing explains itself perfectly.
I don’t know how Sterling Toles produced an instant classic without me ever having heard of him before, and I also don’t know how Boldy made his lax and laid back flow aid in such a gut wrenching lyrical masterpiece on this thing. Christ this thing is good, shout-out Volksgiest for the recommendation.
This album is my favorite of all time for a reason. Unique crunchy guitar tones, certified hits like I Sat by The Ocean and Smooth Sailing, psychedelic blissful moments like on Kalopsia, but the real winners here are the emotional heavy hitters like The Vampyre of Time and Memory, and the final two tracks I Appear Missing (a beautifully tragic and masterfully written song) and the title track which leaves the listener with a true gut punch. This album has no flaws, not a millisecond of filler ... read more
First review had to be one of my all time favorites. This album is panic in musical form and no artist I’ve heard before or since encapsulates this panic and distraught energy like portishead did on this thing. Please dear god release more music portishead :(
