Hakushi stans rejoice, WE ONLY WAITED ONE YEAR FOR STREAMING AFTER ALL
To be honest, I turned this on with that preconceived mindset of “Oh man, I’ve heard so much about how ass this band is.” But man, this really wasn’t that awful. Not great, but I was expecting something that would have me rolling my eyes constantly. Granted, I maybe did a few times in regards to the trap sections, but as a semi-passive listening experience, I didn’t mind this. I do actually enjoy the genre fusion, and the singer has some pretty good moments where ... read more
While Seventeen Seconds is certainly a very menacing, dark and gothic listen, Faith is an album that really does fill me with a sense of dread and just a general numbness. While Robert Smith's songwriting is usually pretty dreary and melancholic, almost every track here makes me just feel so dead inside. The record prior feels like almost pushing back against the darkness a little bit, but Faith feels like almost an acceptance of those dark feelings. The Funeral Party is genuinely one of ... read more
For those that need a new Rosenstock drop to be itched, Pup fucking delivered it. Super good.
Saw this on Instagram a while ago and presaved, did not disappoint! It's not just straight bossa nova, but has really wonderful touches of indie folk and pop that really round out every song here. Reminds me of Haley Heynderickx but not as theatrical, but still the same amount of content and comfiness.
Pretty disappointing. I like the prior song they did together but this just felt like filler. Last track was good, but did the intro really need to be that long?
One of my most anticipated albums of the year, and it fails to disappoint! While the production and style is a lot more brash when compared to something like Nurture, many of those elements that made that album so deep and personal are still here, especially with the writing and some of the more tender tracks. Sure, there can be some lyrics that will raise and eyebrow or pull you out, but I think those lines still coincide with the album's main theme of Porter being comfortable with who ... read more
With the lead up to this album, I already felt like this was going to be the culmination of Hakushi as an artist and how they've grown since this start, and I was right on the money. This feels like an artist flourishing in a new world and coming into their own. This record combines the glitchiness of Somoku Hodo with balladry and compositions similar to Air Ni Ni and Bones of Dreams Attacked, all coalescing into one strange, but beautiful world. Boy's Texture and The Blossom and the ... read more
An absolutely wonderful experience. From what I've heard from Sufjan so far, this is definitely more pop-centric when compared to his other notable albums, but it doesn't take away from how grand and elated some of these tracks can feel. It's funny, so many of the other albums that I felt could've contributed to this projects sound didn't even come out yet. I could feel a little bit of Plastic Beach, Random Access Memories, and even some 22 A Million at times. And yet ... read more
Well, all the vaporwave greats have to start somewhere in the beginning, and Infinity Frequencies is unlike all the others. However, what's presented is really just a mystery bag of bite-sized vapor-flavored candy. Sure, you get a few of the more derivative, chopped up sample work ala Chuck Person or Floral Shoppe, but you also get some glimpses into the more atmosphere driven signalwave that we would come to love today. I think the biggest thing that holds this project back however, is that a ... read more
For me, nearly any vaporwave is good vaporwave if it's in the background, and this is included. Yes, compared to what James and DDS as a whole has made now compared to back then, this is very lackluster and dust in the wind when compared to the current catalogue. But, I do think it's pretty representative of the aesthetics that were really popular with vaporwave at the time. The Shenmue soundtrack is more than worthy to be turned into vapor, and honestly I can still hear some of it's elements ... read more
So many different emotions from this project. The setting I’m envisioning is something like going into a tv and drifting aimlessly as you explore random analog worlds. Either that or something like the Gossamer, going into the deepest recesses of the brain to look at dreams, lost memories, or vacant, abyss-like corners. It seems almost too large to fully grasp on just one listen. Will need to study this further.
Technically didn't come out this year, but the soundtrack has never been released on streaming or anything, so this is what we have at the moment. The moment that I saw this on vinyl, I INSTANTLY had to order a copy. Wizard101 was maybe one of the most important games of my childhood, let alone being one of the first. I made my account when I was only 5 years old, and even though I didn't continue to play, I still came back off and on, getting a one-month subscription every now and then and ... read more
Pretty classic vaporwave sound, but I don’t know, I mess with it a lot. A lot of the samples add to that atmosphere of late 80’s to early 90’s Disney Channel/kids television, but just through a bit of vapor and haze to give it that nostalgic touch. Almost every sample choice fucking bangs, a lot of them being very jazzy tracks either lead by a synth or a saxophone. Nothing really drags on for too long, and almost every song here has a memorable transition or melody that makes ... read more
