While this album is quite directionless, and while it definetly isn't a thougt-provoking masterpiece, it's still hard not to enjoy J. Cole's rhymes and flows. He still showcases consistent and at times impressive rapping, even though there are some slips here and there.
To Pimp A Butterfly is widely regarded as the best hip-hop album ever, as well as one of the best albums ever of any genre. I didn't get that on first listen, but this album has grown on me aggressively.

Kendrick's least commercially-produced album showcases his growth, his pure unaltered emotions and his peak as a truly conscious rapper and person. It is an audio-stage-play with great high points and a few songs that, while they wouldn't hit people's playlists, illustrate Lamar's deep vision about his own trauma, along with the trauma of other people in his community. Kanye has become increasingly self-indulgent in his art as time has gone on. This album, as can be seen in the title, is one of his most hedonistic ones. Thankfully, because of this fact, Kanye's irrefutable genius gets to come to light unrestrained, building a piece with stadium-rattling anthems, emotional trips, impressive production and an immortal sound.
