From YouTube covers to becoming a Beyoncé protégée and refreshing the R&B scene with a Covid reliever album, it has become clear Chlöe possess an innate talent. Her debut album has been anticipated to fully flesh out her potential. 'Have Mercy' and 'Treat Me' signaled the direction of her own sound but those ideas were eschewed in favor of... this. Leading singles from this project in specific and their confusing rollout started to undermine what had been shaping up to be great. 'Body Do' came a week ago as a form of fading hope but it wasn't enough. 'In Pieces' is indeed scattered. I don't know if she's aiming for the haunting harmony vocals and avant-garde R&B that made 'Ungodly Hour' or the organic instrumentation that makes its way into the opener or the flavorlessness of 'How Does It Feel' and 'Pray it Away'. Ultimately, the songwriting is dull and her beautiful vocals are overproduced. Hooks are heavily missed and the ones that do exist get lost in the mix.
In conclusion, the very few great moments are drowned by the disappointment in imagining what could have been.
