Hulvey - COULD BE TONIGHT

I’m genuinely bewildered by how good this was. Influencer$ alone is on another level entirely. Honestly, this is what Christian rap should be about tbh, a combination of storytelling alongside sick beats and Gospel influences being worn on the sleeve. Definitely recommend this record for anyone interested.

José González - Against The Dying of The Light

Jose Gonzalez is always that one singer songwriter who you can rely on to drop a good project.

This is an awesome release. It does sometimes struggle from coherency issues and definitely isn't a "Veneer", but there are 100% some tracks I will be returning to here.

Lyricism is on point too. One of my favourite lines is from the intro track, A Perfect Storm, in which Jose Gonzalez delicately sings regarding AI expansion in recent years,

The only reason I give this a 9/10 and not a 10/10 is because I think there is more of a coherent storyline to be told here, and thats why I really mess w/ songs like MiSOGYNISTICAL, EVERYBODY KNOWS :), FLAKKA, etc. but regardless, this is practically flawless.

Production wise, how could any one rapper do better than this? This is incredibly well produced and in my opinion is easily on par with Clipse’s release last year. IDK raps with conviction too, almost as if hes got something he ... read more

A$AP Rocky - Don't Be Dumb

It was aight. Incoherent first half, commendable second half. I respect that he put effort into this. Don’t Be Dumb/Trip Baby is amazing, the first half mixes beautiful melodies with gorgeous harmonies (and incredible backup vocals) while the second half sees a uniquely comforting take on folktronica/botanica, giving me múm and silje nes vibes (alongside a few other artists). If only the whole album followed like that, I wanted to see more experimentalism like in Don’t Be ... read more

IDK - LiFE 4 A LiFE

In my opinion this is the best single in the rollout, although my heart for him still lays in his more jazzy-laidback stuff

múm - History of Silence
70

Shows they’ve still got it, but definitely not as good as a “Finally we are no one”

múm - Kill the Light

Gotta agree, this is a great song and definitely the best single they’ve released for the album so far

Theo Croker - my friend

Another treat of IDK along side some jazz 🙏🙏 this time however, Theo Croker AND sector 202 team up for this one. Safe to say if you’re sleeping on IDK rn you’re really missing out

múm - Finally We Are No One

I’m completely enamoured by this record and I can only expect that feeling to grow on every listen.

I mean, who can really hate this album? From the lush soundscapes created in “Green Green Grass of Tunnel,” to the cinematic masterpiece which is “K/Half Noise,” and even the spacey, dreamy closing track “The Land Between Solar Systems,” This album goes on an extravagant and captivating journey, one which leaves me awestruck even more by every listen. Rich Brian - WHERE IS MY HEAD?
85

This album was great, and had some stand out points for sure, but can we talk about Timezones for a second??

I haven’t heard of Rich Brian before, so this album was my first impression of him. I loved every second of Timezones, that was the most engaged I’ve been with a rap track in a long, long time. The way Brian story tells is immaculate, and at points I was genuinely at the edge of my seat. I felt like I was at Wall Street the way I was THAT invested.

I definitely see Brian ... read more

Los Tres - Los Tres

I would have never thought I'd ever fall down a Chilean music rabbit hole but uhhh... here I am?

Los Tres' debut eponymous album reminds me a lot of some good old Croatian and Ex-Yugoslavian rock records in the sense that it is extraordinarily fun and an enjoyable listen. This LP genuinely hit close to home, and I absolutely mean that.

Going into it, I didn't really have too many expectations. The start of this album definitely wasn't horrible, but it could've been ... read more

90 —> 80

I was heavily debating what I should give this record…

I think a 90/100 is valid for this project. This blew me away. I didn’t realise Quadeca was truly like that. This project has some insane moments, especially the ending. For a second there it truly feels as if you’ve fallen overboard, and are struggling to keep afloat with each wave of water roaring by.

However, there definitely are some things that need to be improved here. For one, Quadeca’s ... read more

Who needs food stamps when Clipse can feed the family 😝😭😭

alt-J - This Is All Yours

At times this record was awesome, especially with left hand free and the John hurt song (although I may be biased as I had heard left hand free in a car commercial before without realising it and have also listened to John hurt an awful lot too - that song specifically was my introduction to this album). However, sometimes this record gets a bit repetitive, and at times can get really boring. Still a good listen though!

Kaizers Orchestra - Violeta Violeta, Vol I.

Honestly a nice listen! In all honestly though, the first song and hjerteknuser carry this album. Still loved it though

Rush - Moving Pictures

Masterpiece of an album. YYZ is some ridiculous talent 😭 don’t even get me started on the drumming!!! 🤣

Travis Scott - Rodeo
90

Love this album. At first I honestly didn’t really like it, but a few late night listens later and it has been a favourite for a while now.

Pink Floyd - Animals

Peak music no one can tell me otherwise! and that guitar work (especially the acoustic guitar work) is pure genius and sounds absolutely crisp.

Sigur Rós - Hlemmur

Beautiful album… Great for studying 🙏🙏 also the documentary which this soundtrack was recorded for is awesome as well

"@PostWither aight that’s valid I can’t lie, I do agree with that take regarding it supposedly being an east coast rap record. It definitely sonically isn’t one, not atleast until the second half. And yeah, only reason I brought up the posthumous feature issue was because I’ve seen a lot of people leave poor reviews simply as a result of that, which to me feels a little bit unfair, as I’d much prefer a take like yours which atleast tries to critique the actual music itself instead of finding a singular point and disregarding the whole project as a result. I will say though, thank you for actually engaging in a proper conversation with me on here, it feels rare sometimes on this site :D"

"@PostWither I prefer that explanation way more over what was written in your review IMO. Personally, I can see your point with the posthumous reviews. Although the DMX song was recorded with him in the studio, Im not too sure with the origins of the DOOM feature, and that does certainly raise concerns. I guess in IDK’s defense, DOOM’s wife could’ve easily rejected him using that feature however didn’t. In terms of the lack of nostalgia, I understand your point now as well. To me however, I don’t necessarily see it as a weakness on this record, as I think a lot of modern hiphop draws from an amalgamation of inspirations. Certain songs like “Everybody Knows” and “C.O.P.” have clear influences to them IMO, and display a sense of versatility"

On Wither's review of IDK - e.t.d.s. A Mixtape by .idk.
"@PostWither sections of this feel like a poem, and that would honestly be fine if you had indicated this were to be a poem, but clearly this is meant to be a review. Sentences like “DMX and MF DOOM dim, deracinated” are jarring on a reader due to a lack of grammatical structure. Like I said, it’d be perfectly fine if this were a poem, but it isn’t. Also, saying “It sounds nostalgic, but not for any era[…]” and then label that as a reason for it being soulless doesnt feel like a valid criticism here. Not comparing the records in any means, but Kanye West’s “808s & Heartbreak” record was a completely game changing record which at the time was unfamiliar to anything else. Because it wasn’t necessarily nostalgic for any era, is it soulless?"

"@Sauceerr its making me laugh seeing some of these types of reviews, it reminds me of being in 7th grade and using thesaurus.com on every single word to boost my essay score 😭😭 it genuinely feels like there is 0 media literacy in music now and days and reviews like this don’t help in the slightest but rather contribute to the downfall of music and especially hip hop discourse. Feels mad disrespectful but whatever gets the likes I guess 🫩🤦‍♂️"
On AZAP's review of IDK - e.t.d.s. A Mixtape by .idk.
"@BuckGotThoughts yeah, to add onto what @AZAP said, if you read the last letter of every song in the tracklist it reads “Solo Rap Finale” and the last time he left a secret message on a project was Is He Real? which read “USEE4YOURSELF”, the next album"

"@p45tilla never necessarily said that the law equals morality. I don’t want to get into that debate. But to say a song that was recorded and actively partaken in by DMX should not be released because he has unfortunately passed away since the song released is crazy. Has anyone considered that the estate may feel honoured to continue to share his music through projects?"
On SZissou's review of IDK - e.t.d.s. A Mixtape by .idk.
"@SZissou what does equate moral then? Are you saying that no posthumously released albums should exist? IDK literally recorded Start To Finish with DMX in the studio, what else would you want at that point 😭😭"
On SZissou's review of IDK - e.t.d.s. A Mixtape by .idk.
"@SZissou I find it interesting you say without consent because if you knew anything about copyright, then you’d know IDK would’ve had to have passed any feature through both DMX’s and MF DOOM’s estate. Both estates willingly allowed IDK to use their features. Just hang it up bro clutching at straws atp 💔💔"
