Slow, plodding, ominous, stomping and...kinda boring. Stripping the 'heavy as sin' elements of Swans no wave sound leaves a atmospheric bare bones record that isn't awful, but isn't as interesting or developed as the sounds the band would play with later. It's repetitive, slow, and feels like it's building to something truly amazing, and then it ends. It's all build-up and very little pay off. And while it's not awful, it's still a far cry from what this band is capable of. The most interesting it gets is the lyrics, with the albums core themes feeling anxious, scared, depressive and insecure come through perhaps in the music. And it's never boring, but the album is very much all bark and no bite. Maybe that is the intention, but it doesn't particularly make for the most engaging music. It tries to come off as super harsh and slapping, but it comes off as Swans on a leash, neutered. Still, the performances, as minimalist as it is, are still very good, and the record does make a good stepping stone for the bands bigger compositions. For hardcore fans.
