Ranked: Rush

Interested in the discography of prog-rock Canadian giants Rush but off putted by their discography? Use this list to help with your first general listen. Listening in order helps create context, but if you just want to hear the good stuff and not the bad, then this list should help.

Rush - Permanent Waves
1.
96
Probably the best introduction to Rush right from the get go. It's one of Rush's more accessible and catchy records to date, and serves as a great introduction to the groups overall type of sound.
Rush - 2112
2.
95
2112 has a bigger emphases on experimentation, but still has the catchy qualities of Permanent Waves. It's a pretty big learning cerve to listen to a 20+ minute song about space from Permanent Waves, but should pave the way for more prog centric moments the bad faces.
Rush - Moving Pictures
3.
93
Much like Permanent Waves, it's Rush's most popular record, with some of their biggest tracks. This can also act for a intro to the groups sound as well, but Permanent Waves is a better compass towards Rush's general sound. A lot more acceptable then 2112, but still keeping that experimentation alive.
Rush - Signals
4.
85
There is a section of Rush's discography that is known as the 'Synth' period. This album is a pretty good stage setter to some of the more interesting parts of the synth period, and is a damn fine record by itself as well.
Rush - A Farewell to Kings
5.
92
This, along with Hemispheres, contains a part of another gigantic track called Cygnus (which is why this album is right before Hemispheres). This album has more of a medieval vibe to it, and contains some of Rush's best known tracks.
Rush - Hemispheres
6.
95
One of Rush's most experimental and prog-centric records to date, with a mind boggingly insane instrumental
Rush - Fly by Night
7.
75
Another (albeit small) section of Rush's cataloge that is more centered on classic rock tropes. This is probably the best album to come out of that period.
Rush - Grace Under Pressure
8.
95
One of Rush's best synth records, with some of Rush's best tracks.
Rush - Counterparts
9.
78
An example of what to expect from Rush's later releases. Pretty damn good.
Rush - Power Windows
10.
75
More synth Rush, one of the stronger records in this period
Rush - Rush
11.
73
An album that feels a bit like a black sheep in the groups discography, feeling more like Led Zepplin then anything else. Still fun record.
Rush - Caress of Steel
12.
80
Bit more of a proggy, self indulgent record, with goofy ass lyrics, but stunning performances.
Rush - Vapor Trails
13.
Deep, personal lyrics and interesting song crafting.
Rush - Roll the Bones
14.
71
Probably the goofiest Rush album by far, it's a lot more pop infused then any of their other records.
Rush - Presto
15.
71
This is where the lesser Rush albums come into play. This one is just kinda boring.
Rush - Clockwork Angels
16.
Giant, concept record, with a full story-line and everything.
Rush - Test for Echo
18.
A bit plain
Rush - Hold Your Fire
19.
39
One of my lest favorite Rush albums, still got 80s bangers.
