Fraction Gay: Season Two... RANKED!!!

The best friend group on AOTY is back with a new theme-based season! I'm experimenting with something different and ranking the weeks with "WEEK #!!!" signaling the start of the week (like I said, this is experimental and may not happen for future theme-focused seasons if some people aren't fond of it).

Week 1 - Albums That Got Us Into Music (or a Genre) - 8.8
Week 2 - You Won’t Like This (“Guilty” Pleasures) - 6.8
Week 3 - Favorite Songwriters - 8.8
Week 4 - Out of the Comfort Zone (Albums with Genres You Normally Don’t Listen To) - 8.6
Week 5 - EP Week - 8.4
Week 6 - Small But Mighty (Favorite Underground Acts with Fewer Than 20 Ratings) - 7.9
Week 7 - Rainbow Covers - 7.8

Overall Avg. Score (+ Bonus Album): 8.2

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
1.

WEEK 1!!!

@CLJesse's Album That Got Her Into Music

Short Review: Soooo I accidentally deleted my review when I was trying to bump up the score... so that sucks. What doesn't suck, however, is this album!
Clarence Clarity - No Now
2.
95
@elitimesfour's Album That Got Them Into AOTY

Short Review: This is the third listen and I'm now wanting to get back into this again, like, right away. This is probably one of the sharpest, most forward-thinking and infectiously off-the-wall pop albums I've ever heard!
Superorganism - Superorganism
3.
92
@Plats' Album That Got Them Into AOTY (It was supposed to be "Blackstar" but we got uncomfortable in the end)

Short Review: I deleted the review for a proper review that's probably gonna be posted around the 3rd anniversary of this account. To put it short, though, this is some fun, energetic and creatively-produced pop shit!
Kanye West - Late Registration
4.
93
@MrA's Album That Got Him Into Hip Hop

Short Review: I'm a sad person because I never binged Kanye's whole discog yet. This is easily the best I've heard from him yet, however (besides KIDS SEE GHOSTS, of course).
Green Day - Dookie
5.
90
@aidanbriggs' Album That Got Him Into Music

Short Review: As far as 90's Green Day goes, this is easily their most accomplished and consistent work.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Trilogy
6.
75
@TreyLikesBands' Album That Got Him Into Music

Short Review: As theatrical as it is, I expected to like this a lot less. There's definitely some high-class prog rock material here even if it does suffer from the usual cliches.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Greatest Hits
7.
74
@M3GAWATT's Album That Got Him Into Music

Short Review: A lot of the tunes are easily recognizable and written with the signature pop sensibility that made Tom Petty such a revered figure in the mainstream. Even if heartland rock isn't really my thing, I can definitely appreciate the legacy of this thing.
Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3
8.
89
WEEK 2!!!

@Plats' "Guilty" Pleasure

Short Review: I really binged this band back then due to a certain nostalgia of listening to "Welcome Home" on repeat (yes, I was that fucked of a child) and, while I'm not nearly as big on this band as I was those two years ago, I still find a lot of the production choices and hooks really intriguing and catchy. I would definitely skip the story, though.
DOOM - Born Like This
9.
81
@Hawk_'s "Guilty" Pleasure

Short Review: I'd definitely take Madvillainy over this, and I'm sure many others do as well, but what's here is solid with many of the complacent strengths MF DOOM takes with him. Could do without the homophobic “BATTY BOYZ", though.
Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel - Nail
10.
80
@CLJesse's "Guilty" Pleasure

Short Review: For some reason, I fell in love with the Disney villain aesthetic the lead singer exudes on top of these campy instrumentals.
Signor Benedick The Moor - El Negro
12.
61
@TreyLikesBands' "Guilty" Pleasure

Short Review: The lyrics are great and this is pretty impressive for a project Signor worked on in a college dorm. At the same time... yeah... it can sound pretty cheap. I appreciate the instrumental variety that he juggles on this record but they also sound like loyalty-free stock beats you would find in a YouTube copyright manager.
Rusty Cage - Gangstalkers, Vol. 4
13.
55
@MrA's "Guilty" Pleasure

Short Review: There are a few songs I really liked and it's really well-written but this album ends up feeling kinda derivative
Panic! at the Disco - A Fever You Can't Sweat Out
14.
49
@M3GAWATT's "Guilty" Pleasure

Short Review: Despite a couple of obvious standouts, this debut suffers from tacky production, awful mixing and an overreliance on its "pretentiousness". It also has "Gears for Breakfast, Tacks for Snacks".
Car Seat Headrest - How to Leave Town
15.
97
WEEK 3!!!

@Plats' Favorite Songwriter (Josh already took Thom Yorke)

Review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/plats/album/25477-how-to-leave-town/
Ugly Casanova - Sharpen Your Teeth
17.
88
@CLJesse's Favorite Songwriter (Issac Brock)

Short Review: I was lazy in terms of checking out side projects from bands I binged. That's why I came to this particular Modest Mouse side project genuinely surprised at just how top-notch the material is!
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
18.
87
@Wessel_'s Favorite Songwriter (Buckingham-Nicks-McVie)

Short Review: A few moments that didn't age too well aside (at least in my opinion), this album contains a lot of fantastic, classic tunes with great songwriting and vocal performances.
Genesis - Foxtrot
19.
86
@TreyLikesBands' Favorite Songwriter (Peter Gabriel)

Short Review: Along with the other Genesis project I've heard ("Selling England by the Pound"), this is a fresh, fun take on the classic prog rock genre that I totally wasn't expecting.
Bright Eyes - Fevers and Mirrors
20.
85
@MrA's Favorite Songwriter (Conor Oberst)

Short Review: I should stop getting spoiled...
Grinderman - Grinderman 2
21.
83
@PipePanic's Favorite Songwriter (Nick Cave)

Short Review: Grinderman makes me wanna grindonaman 2 (now even better than its predecessor!)
Exuma - Exuma
24.
90
@TreyLikesBands' "Out-of-Comfort-Zone" Album

Short Review: This is an extremely raw and euphoric Caribbean folk record pulled me in with its fantastic writing and tribal instrumentation!
Pulp - Different Class
25.
88
@MrA's "Out-of-Comfort-Zone" Album

Short Review: Horny
Between the Buried and Me - Alaska
26.
88
@CLJesse's "Out-of-Comfort-Zone" Album

Short Review: Really, REALLY technical progressive metal/metalcore. The sheer complexity and tightness of the performances and production is simply astounding!
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Exodus
27.
85
@M3GAWATT's "Out-of-Comfort-Zone" Album

Short Review: Reggae is definitely not a genre I'd frequent, but the material on here runs surprisingly deep (and earwormy).
Caleb Landry Jones - The Mother Stone
28.
66
@elitimesfour's "Out-of-Comfort-Zone" Album

Short Review: "The Mother Stone" is a fun, well-written and meticulously produced record that drowns a bit too much in its inspiration and runs a bit too long and wears a little thin after a while.
Burial - Kindred
29.
98
WEEK 5!!!

@Plats' EP of the Week

Half-Assed Review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/plats/album/3417-kindred/
Glassjaw - Our Color Green (The Singles)
30.
95
@M3GAWATT's EP of the Week

Short Review: I've been meaning to listen to Glassjaw for a while and... holy shit! Everything on this EP is superb and it all makes for one of the most consistently top-tier EPs I think I've ever heard!
Dead Kennedys - In God We Trust, Inc.
31.
86
@PipePanic's EP of the Week

Short Review: NAZI PUNKS FUCK OFF!!!
These Arms Are Snakes - This Is Meant To Hurt You
32.
86
@CLJesse's EP of the Week

Short Review: SwagMaster72

That's not the description for the EP, we just found them around the time we listened to this.

In all seriousness, this is super noisy post-hardcore shit! And you know I love my super noisy post-hardcore shit!
The Fall Of Troy - Phantom on the Horizon
33.
80
@MrA's EP of the Week

Short Review: The Fall of Trey (I get burnt doing these short write-ups, ya know?)
Mac DeMarco - Another One
34.
74
@TreyLikesBands' "EP" of the Week

Short Review: It doesn't stray too far from his usual work, but it's still a very pretty, well-produced record with Mac's jangly guitars and laid-back vocal performances at the forefront.
Belaganas - Listen Up
35.
66
@aidanbriggs' EP of the Week

Short Review: This EP is absolutely fine. They drown in their VERY obvious BROCKHAMPTON influence and it isn't nearly as memorable as that band's music but it's got enough solid production and chemistry to make it a reasonable effort. I also heard that these guys are dickhats... so that's a thing.
Neupink - Swordflower Hills Killer
36.
87
WEEK 6!!!

@Plats' Favorite Underground Artist (that has a low amount of ratings)

Short Review: Neupink is probably one of the more underappreciated artists in the hardcore electronic scene. It's loud as fuck, yes, but the noisy punk aesthetics combined with the addictive percussion make me return to this artist more than I should! That combined with some of his best production and tracks make for his best release by far!
These Arms Are Snakes - Oxeneers or the Lion Sleeps When Its Antelope Go Home
37.
86
@M3GAWATT's Favorite Underground Artist (that has a low amount of ratings)

Short Review: Noisy post-hardcore shit but math is involved.
The Psychic Paramount - Gamelan Into the Mink Supernatural
38.
85
@TreyLikesBands' Favorite Underground Artist (that has a low amount of ratings)

Short Review: Psychedelic rock AND noise rock?! Now ya got me! The combination of sci-fi aesthetics and raw guitar noise topped off with the jam band approach makes for a pretty unique listen.
Lizard Prom - Lizard Prom
39.
82
@PipePanic's Favorite Underground Artist (that has a low amount of ratings)

Short Review: The personality coming from the band and the lead vocalist plus the rawness of the post-punk production is really something to admire!
Luminous Bodies - Nah Nah Nah Yeh Yeh Yeh
40.
80
@CLJesse's Favorite Underground Artist (that has a low amount of ratings)

Short Review: Yeh Yeh Yeh
Lysistrata - Breath In/Out
41.
79
@MrA's Favorite Underground Artist (that has a low amount of ratings)

Short Review: Not only is that guy clean, this album is also some pretty cool, pretty math-y post-hardcore.
Swamp Dogg - Love, Loss, and Auto-Tune
42.
55
@Wessel_'s Favorite Underground Artist (that has a low amount of ratings)

Short Review: It's amusing for the first few tracks, then the rather basic sonic concept wears thin after a while.
Gospel - The Moon Is a Dead World
43.
94
WEEK 7!!!

@CLJesse's Pink Album

Short Review: That pussy strong
Fishmans - Orange
45.
84
@PipePanic's Orange Album

Short Review: Can't wait to binge these guys! This reminds me a lot of my history with SEGA games.
Helmet - Meantime
46.
79
@M3GAWATT's Red Album

Short Review: This guy ain't even wearing a helmet lol haha what a fucking loser
Streetlight Manifesto - Somewhere in the Between
47.
73
@TreyLikesBands' Green Album (kind of a stretch but whatevs)

Short Review: I don't usually vibe with ska, but this is a good improvement over the other Streetlight Manifesto record.
Street Sects - The Kicking Mule
48.
71
@MrA's Purple Album

Review: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/plats/album/119857-the-kicking-mule/

Adding on to that half-assed review, it just don't think it has the same impressive soundplay as "End Position". It grew on me, though, so fair's fair.
fun. - Aim and Ignite
49.
60
@aidanbriggs' Yellow Album

Short Review: It's a lot better than "Some Nights", but it still has a lot of questionable and at times obnoxious moments in its production and songwriting that still make me stray away from this band the more I mature as a music listener.
Fog Lake - Dragonchaser
50.
84
@elitimesfour's Bonus Album!

Short Review: This is hella vibey with some fantastic lyrics and great lo-fi production. I don't understand why y'all were dippin' on this album.
