Illenium - Ascend
Aug 17, 2019
57
By now, Illenium has carved a place out for himself in the modern electro-pop scene alongside acts like The Chainsmokers and Said The Sky, but unfortunately his rise to mainstream relevance has resulted in a more watered-down, flimsy approach to composition and production. About 70% of this album feels gratuitous, consisting either of uninspired re-treads or needless filler. There is some enjoyment to be had here, as tracks like Good Things Fall Apart, Sad Songs and In Your Arms capitalize on Illenium's greatest strengths as a producer in a way that feels more distinct than the rest of the record. As a whole, however, this project feels painfully bloated and could have greatly benefitted from some restraint and some more varied songwriting and production.
