AOTY 2019

Thought it would be mediocre; turned out to be worse...

The title of the album is perfect; they literally escape from New York stylistically and leave most of their actual qualities behind...

We got generic, trendy production and aesthetics which appeal way more to the Flatbush Zombies than the other members...a lot of the album actually plays around the FBZ-aesthetic and their gimmicks, which represses the personality of Joey, Underachievers and Pro Era-members to the point where they're ... read more

This might be to me what Burial's Untrue is to most other people...

Listen to this while walking through the midnight without any light surrounding you; it's weird, uncomfortable and extends any emotion you feel in your head at the's almost like feeling the feedback of past events which stuck in your head...

I was really conflicted with this album like a lot of other listeners who heavily anticipated Tyler's next studio album...kinda sad that it rather tended to grow off me with multiple listens, but at least I got a vague reason on why this project doesn't stick with me...

I feel like this album isn't nearly as bold in aesthetic and as rich in meaning/concept as it pretends to be...ofc there are really cool compositions combining (no, we don't go the alliteration route) the smooth, beautiful ... read more

You know it's god-level if you still have no clue how to approach the album...20 long years later...

Ahead of the curve and absolutely genius; easily top 5 in terms of 90s hip hop albums which aged the best...

78 the Lupe-crowd at least...

Lupe can be as ambitious and intricate as he wants while creating lyrics, concept, the album structure; it's most of the time theoretically impressive, but that he executed the supposedly heavy food in a compelling way is a thought I tended to stay away from with progressing time...

The highlights give you a great impression of Lupe's lyrical talent over grand, thrilling, detailed production while the worst parts kinda pretend that the consistency ... read more

Score reflects the optimal way of listening to this: Trying to not pay attention to the lyrics...

You really wanna tell me that there is the possibility that his best 2019-release might be the book he wrote?... least hoped for solid production and rapping...I didn't even got the production for the most part; I quite liked a lot of 6ix's production tbh...

...and don't come at me with the writing...
May 10, 2019

....yeah, I rather stick to the book...

Took the established formula and improved on every positive quality the debut had...RTJ 2 is more abitious, layered, substance-heavy and takes the hype-factor to new extremes with only a few songs which get oveshadowed by the density of their surroundings...
May 9, 2019
Fundamentally mostly solid, but painfully obsolete at the same time...developing Run The Jewels into a real collaboration project wasn't a straight route of advantage and it heavily shows within their self-titled debut album; having the successor as a reference point degrades this piece of art into the position of a prototype...

A lot of the songs (especially the hooks; didn't remember that most of them were that weak) just pale in comparison and fail to deliver; looking at it in a vacuum ... read more

Fans claim that this is underrated, yet it never really builds steam until the last third...

...kinda lame, but fits the feelings I have for the gangster cult: not bad, but kinda lame...

Jay-Z & Money: A relationship I couldn't stand if we talk about this part of his career...a wannabe styler with a fading sense for substance and his soulless girlfriend; abused by the man only to fill the complex hole he didn't notice yet...
Apr 25, 2019
Typical niche-album...your white gloves which fit smooth hands perfectly; solid 30 minutes if you like to look at this wardrobe, but might be either stylistically unappealing or unfortunately too comfortable and safe for other people...

I do like this wardrobe tho...

This might be the culmination of a movement rather unnoticed until last year, where you could find the SotC-fingerprints on the latest release by Earl Sweatshirt...

Jasper Marsalis, former member of Standing on the Corner and the man behind the pseudonym Slauson Malone, released a sound collage with an even bolder direction than his earlier work; abrasive, chaotic, off-kilter, yet conceptualized and cohesive despite some abrupt transitioning between the pieces...this is easily the most ... read more

Definitely my favourite Paak-solo album, but unfortunately it shot it's wad way too fast...

The first four tracks are some of Anderson's best work, but after that it kinda goes the formulaic route with similar grooves I already heard on Oxnard...Twilight is the only track on the latter part which can hold my attention as much as the beginning of this album; the closer with the late Nate Dogg is also stylistically distinguishable, but not that appealing to me...

(Also the length is a positive ... read more

Out of the acclaimed AnCo-projects the only one which doesn't click...

The two man-occupation feels like a restriction; the aesthetic is interesting as always, but the album structure remains odd to the point where I still can't really figure out the appeal of those short, vignette-like songs...

Overall, Sung Tongs fails to paint the eccentric, yet harmonious picture and pretends that there's a lot more going on than I do hear (which gets relevant on the longer tracks of the album)...
Apr 12, 2019
Tbh I should be happy for him discovering the immaculate taste of almond milk since it resulted in his best studio album...
Apr 12, 2019
I feel like for every neat quality on the individual songs is some relativizing one; putting this in the position of decency...

J.Cole scratches the surface of the icecap with his scraper, climbs on the fan-made pedestal and gets praised like the second coming of Christ for doing "something".....
Apr 12, 2019
Unadventurous, boring; sometimes the writing is so subpar that you ask yourself if Cole actually checks his bars after writing them...

...a good amount of people would use this description for every J.Cole album, but Born Sinner is easily the worst offender...

Only really worthwhile song might be the title track...
Apr 12, 2019
It's actually weird, but mostly boring...

...weird because, in 2019, you can kinda identify that this project is something Cole could make, yet everything about it feels so strange...I wouldn't even call it outdated, but somewhat unessential...
