AOTY 2023
SZA - SOS

Some gems sprinkled here and there but SZA's latest outing loses out on CTRL's sense of cogency and transformative production. I wish it capitalized more on the stream-of-consciousness flow that flushes through its first half.

Halsey's "concept album" has always been, and probably will forever remain, one of the most infamous catchphrases of 2010s mainstream pop, with her studio efforts lacking the songwriting chops necessary to communicate said concepts properly, and the concepts themselves being far from ingenious.

Is "If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power" any different in that regard? No. Except this time around, it doesn't matter.

Because what Halsey, Reznor and Ross have brought to life on ... read more

Bleachers - How Dare You Want More

But this slaps? What's with the low score
Japanese Breakfast - Jubilee
90
EASILY the most consistently exciting record I've heard all year. This album fucks.
Quadeca - From Me To You
70
For a moment, forget Aesop Rock exists. When did we last we get a white rap album of this quality? When El-P dropped 'Cancer 4 Cure'? Quadeca finds his footing in continually transmorphing beats, and even though his heartfelt lyricism more often than not comes across as amateurish, 'From Me To You's sincerity and openness to experimentation marks a revitalization for a genre that's been stuck in the gutter for years.
Taylor Swift - folklore
61
This critic score is quite ridiculous
Jessie Ware - What's Your Pleasure?
90
I just can't see myself lowering this score. Future Nostalgia is child's play compared to this.
Yung Lean - STARZ
82
Dance In The Dark plays in the club wyd?

a. strip
b. strip

Yung Lean - Violence
90
ngl it's probably his best song right after Ginseng
Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia
78
So many ratings bending under the hype. It's no great record, even though it shows a lot of improvement on all sides.
Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia
82
Never thought I'd live to witness Dua Lipa release a SOTY worthy single
HAIM - Now I'm in It
83
This fucking year haha. It's as if every capable pop artist out there said "aight I'm coming for the crown this time" and they're really doing it.
Kanye West - JESUS IS KING
49
Everything leading up to the release of this album has been a journey. It's such a shame that, at the end of it, the only thing we're left with is the thrill of the ride.
FKA twigs - home with you
NR
Sweet Jesus, what a comeback from Holy Terrain.
Maggie Rogers - Heard It In A Past Life
70
Spent way too much time listening to this album to not give it a positive rating.

best: Overnight, Alaska, On + Off, Say It, Fallingwater, Retrograde
worst: Give a Little, Past Life, Back In My Body

Tei Shi - Even If It Hurts (feat. Blood Orange)
92
I think I just climaxed mentally
Charli XCX - 2099
80
"2099" feels slightly overworked, but still blows HAIM and Sky Ferreira collaborations out of the water.
Rich Brian - Kids
86
Man do I love the organic instrumentation on these singles. Keeping my fingers crossed for "The Sailor".
slowthai - Nothing Great About Britain
85
10/10 made me wish I were British so that I could understand the lyrics
Raleigh Ritchie - Time in a Tree
79
I've found this a step-up from his debut album at all levels. The core concept of the song alone is way more interesting than anything Ritchie has ever written before.

On ha's review of FKA twigs - MAGDALENE
"Interesting take. Even though I love this album, and I think it's one of the year's best, I assume it's gonna come in for a lot of criticism because of its challenging arrangements. It sits somewhere on the brink of the pop music spectrum, but listening to it, I never quite felt like twigs expanded upon it in any way. Reminds of a modernised (and way more convoluted) version of Hounds of Love. "
