No doubt this will raise some eyebrows, but "EP1" is - in this reviewer's opinion, anyway - frankly undeserving of the acidic flak it's gotten since its release, seven years ago. Not just to the extent that it deserves more than Pitchfork's infamous 1.0, either; this EP's getting a 100 from me, and I'm going to tell you exactly why.

There is absolutely no question that in dispensing with both Kim Deal and the harder-edge production of their glory days, the 'Pixies' (I'll explain the ... read more

It's Fathers' Day 2020 in the UK as I write this, and despite being only 23 years old, I'm indulging my inner-Dad with a play-through of Neil Finn's second solo outing, "One Nil."

One of the reasons I've given this LP a go is the acidic (and anomalous) one-star review it received in NME. I've written some spiteful reviews in my time, but Mark Beaumont's offering is a character assassination of totally unwarranted venom. There's no way a MOR LP could possibly court the degree of aggro ... read more

Laibach make of "The Sound of Music" everything the Rogers & Hammerstein 1968 film is not - profoundly disturbing, industrial and postmodern. It's all so *wrong* - from the nucleus of the very idea, to the anarchistic documentary that followed the LP, following the band on a bizarre journey to promote album with live performances in North Korea. The novelty does wear thin in places, for sure - but to begin with at least, *what* novelty it is.

Doubtless, any record re-processed by ... read more

This is obviously only an opinion, but I find there's something annoyingly goofy about Run the Jewels - and not for want of trying, either. The subjects tackled by this - and previous - records are relevant, burning topics; a good deal of complex emotions are widely felt in response to the injustices, prejudices and inequalities tackled by Killer Mike and El-P's angrily delivered verses. The same level of attention, however is not - in my opinion - afforded the lyrical content.

Musically, I ... read more

Though hopelessly derivative of Kraftwerk, Ausgang Verboten are undeniably good fun. Their brand of repetitive, robotic minimal wave electronica is borne of the same flesh as iconic electronic records such as "Die Mensch·Maschine" and "Computerwelt", only with considerably less variation (particularly with regards to vocals) and, by coming much later than those records, lacking the element of surprise that made the genre's pioneers famous.
