richard d james is very good at making music that makes me question what the fuck is going on inside his head
This feels like an American Depeche Mode album. less subtle and far angrier Depeche Mode. Reznor's lyrics here aren't flawless (there are several songs where the lyrics sound like they were written from the perspective of a 15 year old) but you know.. that's all part of the vibe. It's a good angsty angry mad bad time that in no way whatsoever sets up the rest of the Nine Inch Nails discography.
Subverting the formulas and tropes of then modern Electronic Dance Music into a maybe industry changing but nonetheless fully enjoyable electropop album with a unique concept and gorgeous soundscapes that laid the foundations for the greatest thing ever made in the history of music, Fresh Static Snow (SMILE! :D World Tour Version)
This one really is a time capsule of dance music in 2010, but with Pendulum's now signature rock-dnb sound. Like In Silico, there's still a lot of the band's best work on this album in spite of the low critic scores, only this time it's more consistent, if a little more over-indulgent.
I am not sure what the critics were on here this album rules. Blending drum and bass with more rock oriented instrumentation is an interesting choice that leads to an album that, while certainly less consistent than its predecessor, contains some of the best work the band has put out to date.
Dated as hell but the energy is here and it wants you to make fucking sure you know it is. Really fantastic mix of styles of dnb making each track feel unique and important whilst also remaining cohesive.
immaculately produced industrial-grade 80s synth pop album made with whatever pots and pans they could find in the studio's kitchen
Honestly who trusts the mainstream music critics anyway? Certainly one of ELO's best albums if not their best, the ambitious concept perfectly blends a sense of optimism for a future and nihilism from a protagonist who longs to return home but knows that he never will, all set to what was at the time a novel, futuristic synth pop sound. One of those albums that reminds me why I love listening to music so much.
It sounds like Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge if it was mixed by Rich Costey in 2025. It's louder, clearer, somehow less compressed. This has the unfortunate side effect of making some of the songs lose that extra special something that helped make the original such a fantastic album. Similar to (but not exactly like) Muse's Origin of Symmetry Xx Anniversary RemixX, it is an interesting way to listen to some of the songs on this album and in some cases maybe it is a better mix, but I ... read more
The OK Computer of bad political commentary. Avoids an obscenely low score because Kill or Be Killed is like pretty good and I think Compliance and Won't Stand Down are fine.
Matt Bellamy remembers bands are supposed to release albums and throws together a couple of 80s themed songs to string the completely separate singles they recorded years apart together into an 80s themed album to cash in on the 80s being really trendy. The only saving grace is that most of the songs are fine if not a little bit good (Algorithm, Pressure, Break it to Me and The Void stand out to me)
A weird one. Concept is messy. So its.. "Drones" and most sources say its about Drone warfare but Matt has explicitly stated that he's using drones as a metaphor for losing empathy. Also there's a lot of Matt whining about being loveless presumably because his relationship with Kate Hudson was three large footsteps from the grave. The songs themselves are occasionally very good. Dead Inside is a Depeche Mode esque pop rock banger, Reapers fucks, The Handler is.. good. ... read more
Maybe I was just young and impressionable when this album came out and my older brother showed me Unsustainable and I thought it was the sickest thing ever recorded he's playing that shit on a guitar man its so cool I'm literally 10 years old and my attitude towards that track carries over to the rest of this album. I love it because of what it is not in spite of it. Also Animals is genuinely one of the best songs they've ever released.
Fun albums to remind you of the summer time. I'll never understand why so many people hate it.
Grandiose, apocalyptic rock. Muse at their finest. Musically and conceptually flawless start to finish. Why did Matt stop writing music like this. Why.
the fact that this album was released by the same band that released "Will of the People" is quite sad
