King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard RANKED

With every one of their albums bouncing to a new and strange idea and having a distinct and energetic sound that's hard to match, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard have made a name for themselves as one of the most exciting rock bands of the 2010's.

Average score: 78.4/100

1: Crumbling Castle
2: Robot Stop
3: Head On/Pill
4: People-Vultures
5: Rattlesnake
6: Cyboogie
7: Beginner's Luck
8: The Fourth Colour
9: I'm In Your Mind
10: Mars For The Rich

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Nonagon Infinity
Best: The whole album, it's essentially 1 song anyway

Nonagon Infinity is an explosive, loud, genre-blending epic that repeats in an infinite loop. Not a single detail feels out of place, and every song is endlessly catchy. How a band can possibly make a looping album where every track sounds the same that doesn't wear on you is beyond me.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - I'm In Your Mind Fuzz
Best: I'm In Your Mind
One of the more accessible King Gizzard albums, and by that I mean an album that sort of represents all of their music that works as a great starting point to their music. The album itself is amazing. It's hard as hell, it's loud, it's trippy, and is sort of what marked their signature psychedelic sound.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Polygondwanaland
Best: Crumbling Castle

Their 4th album from 2017 feels like it has a much more progressive sound than the rest of their albums, and that element has made me love this album quite a lot. Soundwise it's nothing incredibly new but a ridiculously solid album with some of their best material.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Flying Microtonal Banana
Best: Rattlesnake

King Gizzard venture into the world of microtonal instruments, using melodies and rhythms that are very rare in western music. They combine this sound with their signature psychedelic sound seamlessly, and create a somewhat apocalyptic atmosphere at the same time. One of their strangest albums but I'm all for it.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Infest the Rats' Nest
Best: Mars For The Rich

King Gizzard take a swing at thrash metal and for the most part, they do a seriously great job. Yes, it's not the most original metal album of all time as all the metal elitists on RYM like to suggest, but it is without a doubt a fun one.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Gumboot Soup
Best: Beginner's Luck

For their final 2017 album, King Gizzard throw every sound they'd experimented with throughout the year as well as others from previous years and essentially create a soup of an album. It might not be their most consistent, but in my opinion it contains some of their best- and most catchy tracks to date.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - K.G.
Best: Intrasport

King Gizzard return to their microtonal series with K.G., a punchier and more varied version of Flying Microtonal Banana (and I mean varied; there's a goddamn Turkish house track here). It's a blast of a listen, although I do prefer Vol. 1 as a full album.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Fishing for Fishies
Best: Cyboogie

The band spreads an environmental message through a more accessible mix of their typical psychedelic sound and boogie rock, and the result is a really catchy and groovy album that demands you to start boogieing. Not their most consistently gripping, but a definite highlight.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Float Along - Fill Your Lungs
Best: Head On/Pill

King Gizzard's first real swing at psych rock is loud, incredibly rough and incredibly mesmerizing. They haven't found their signature sound yet but is a definite step in the right direction.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Murder of the Universe
Best: The Lord Of Lightning

The band's second album of 2017 is split into three separate parts all with their own storyline, and with many elements of spoken word and off the wall instrumentation filled to the brim with strange time signatures, it's one of their most ambitious releases yet. Not one I come back to all the time but a solid one nonetheless.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - 12 Bar Bruise
Best: Cut Throat Boogie

12 Bar Bruise is easily the least polished in the band's discography as the recording quality is pretty rough, but for a debut it sure kicks some ass as it's filled to the brim with noisy garage rock bangers that even then held the band's unique charm.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Quarters!
Best: The River

With 4 tracks each at 10 minutes of length, making up exactly a quarter of the album, King Gizzard also go for a softer approach to their psychedelic sound and go down a somewhat jazzy route. I think more could've been done with this concept but it's still a good album.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Eyes Like the Sky
Best: Not sure

A spaghetti western audiobook with thematic King Gizzard instrumentals. It is what it is.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard with Mild High Club - Sketches of Brunswick East
Best: The Spider In Me

King Gizz team up with psychedelic pop group Mild High Club to create Sketches of Brunswick East, one of their more mellow and jazzier albums. If you like their less in your face stuff you'll probably dig this.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Oddments
Best: Hot Wax

Oddments sounds more like a collection of odds and ends than anything, and while it's not bad it's definitely their least cohesive and well thought out. It's a mixed bag, and while Gumboot Soup was too it had more great material to back it up.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Paper Mâché Dream Balloon
Best: Trapdoor

Paper Mâché Dream Balloon is sweet, relaxing and probably the band's most wholesome album... if we're not focusing on the lyrics. The folky sound mixes well with their signature style and it's really solid overall.
