John Zorn - Xu Feng
71

It's a really cool combination of electronic, jazz and rock. Everything feels so all over the place, both in a good and bad way, it's a case of pretty high highs, but also pretty messy lows. I guess that's somewhat to be expected when you set out to make something this experimental, and there are definitely some big highlights of the album. Most notably, I thought that the drumming was really engaging and dynamic, it managed to carry the high adrenaline energy of the songs when ... read more

Maggie Rogers - Don't Forget Me
69

I love Maggie Rogers' singing here, but I just don't think this kind of country pop is for me. It's a great album on a technical level, everything is produced really well, and almost all of the songs have decently catchy melodies, but I just wished I connected to this album on a personal level more, which I found a shame. I definitely preferred the more singer-songwriter focused songs over the pop orientated stuff.

Fun-Da-Mental - Erotic Terrorism
25

I'm only listening to this because of the name, unfortunatley, this album isn't nearly as interesting as it's name would lead you believe. It's pretty underwhelming techno and breakbeat with some equally dry and sometimes annoying rapping on top. You can tell that this album is trying to be experimental and trying to make a statement using the spoken word samples, but it just completely fails to culminate into anything of any real substance. This was an absolute slog to get ... read more

Harumi - Harumi
82

Everything up until the last 2 tracks are your pretty standard 60s pop album, Harumi's singing is nice, and the slightly weathered production gives this album some charm. The last 2 tracks though, are these 20 minutes spoken word pieces. They feel completely out of place compared to everything else, but I also kinda like them, they add a weirdness to the album that I feel like the whole project would be imcomplete without their inclusion.

Loyle Carner - hopefully !
84

Way more low-key than "Hugo", in both production and rapping, and I think it works to the album's emotional benefit

Uลพ Jsme Doma - Uprostล™ed slov
39

It's charming at points, but all of the off-the-wall experimentation just ended up being annoying. You can tell everyone here is a talented musican, but it just didn't culminate in an enjoyable experience. It's a shame, because this style of music is usually something I would enjoy, but it just didn't click with me at all, I hadn't even reached the halfway point when this album started to get repetitive and grading. Again, there are moments, paticularly on the second ... read more

The Difference Machine - Unmasking The Spirit Fakers
78

The production here at times reminded me of something EL-P would make, it's great and pretty vaired too. The rapping can be a little hit or miss for me, unfortunately, sometimes they meshed well with the production, other times less so. Still, this is an incredibly impressive and underrated rap album.

Johnny Harris - Movements
94

This really is a phenomenal showcase of Johnny Harris' talents as a musician, there are elements of funk, jazz, and psychedelic rock all throughout this album, with a classical spin being put on everything. Some songs sound like there from 1920s-era showtunes, while some still sound pretty modern for today's standard. Even with all of these different musical styles at play here, they never clash with each other, every song feels like an extension from the previous, exploring different ... read more

Masada - 50th Birthday Celebration, Vol. 7
88

This is a really exciting listen the whole way through, and everyone has such great chemistry with each other. The fact that this was all preformed live is insane, the quality of the recording makes it sound like a studio album at times. It's also pretty all over the place, each song going through so many different passages, yet it's all done without sacrificing any cohesion. I feel like John Zorn is very quickly becoming one of my favourite and most exciting jazz musicians.

Lucrecia Dalt - ¡Ay!
82

It's crazy how many moving parts there are to this album, and it all is pretty tightly packed, being only 34 minutes long. You really hear a bit of everything throughout the album, yet everything maintains this dark aesthetic to it that makes for a surprisingly consistent album sonically. It's a really creative album, with some great and subdued singing that compliments the production really well.

Deafheaven - Sunbather
91

Probably the best Blackgaze album I've listened to (even though that isn't exactly a large list). I was confused at first why this album was tagged "Summer" and "ethereal" because they aren't really the first things I think of when I think of a black metal album. However after listening to the album, it all made sense, the fusion of post-rock and black metal does wonders it making this album sound unique and almost dreamy. It's hard to explain without ... read more

Kelxton - Juno

Thank you @sunnyxeleton for sending me your new EP!
You have a really great voice for this kind of music, it's very subdued, and it works since it's just you and a guitar. It's isn't the most insane thing in the world, but the EP still achieves what it sets out to do, which is a collection of pleasant and pretty lofi, sets of folk songs. Considering you only started playing guitar back in November, this is really impressive, keep it up!

They Are Gutting A Body Of Water & Full Body 2 - Epcot
80

The DNB stuff feels a little out of place at first, especially considering it comes in so abruptly, but honestly, by the end, they were my favourite aspect of the EP. The shoegaze aspects was great as well, the atmosphere created in the first two tracks was quite reminiscent of "LSD And The Search For God", with how much the vocals are drowned out by the production. It's a combination of musical styles that shouldn't work on the surface, and yet do.

Bernard Estardy - La Formule du Baron
62

It's a little too inconsistent for me to call this album great, but there are definitely great moments to be found here. The opening track is phenomenal and the songs that fuse samba and jazz are really great. However, you also get songs like "Meut s Boogie" which is a pretty exhasutive listen, even though it's only 2 and a half minutes long. You get the sense that Estardy was just experimenting with a number of different styles of music here, some work and some don't.

Annahstasia - Tether
85

Annahstasia has one of the most unique and beautiful voices I've ever heard. Her very breathy style of singing indicate someone with a lot of life experience, and everything she says is given more weight as a result. Also incredible is the production and instrumentation. A lot of this album is a perfect example of "less is more", where the instruments are more stripped back, and the singing is more subdued, it works really well at putting an emphasis on the writing, which is also ... read more

Negativland - Free
88

A very weird album, the constant use of television samples make this sound like a broken transmission album from the past 10 years, not something from the early 90s. The heavy use of sampling also works well to convey a pretty bleak outlook of America, there are themes of gun violence, mental health struggles, foreign intervention, and the banality of work, and it's all handled really well. The moments that are more reminiscent of typical alternative songs from the early 90s are few and ... read more

Thanks @sundancer for sending me your new album!
There are some interesting things done here with the ambient genre. It's a lot of drawn out pieces that slowly build and build, getting subtly more distorted. While I think there are a number of moments on this album that are immersive, I also wish that the songs culminated in a way that felt more satisying, there are also moments where the album feels a little bloated.

The Fertile Crescent - Strategy of Two Heavens
61

All the pieces are here to create a great super industrial pop album, but rarely does this album come together. The singing just felt so low energy compared to the production, often it feels like an afterthough more than anything. The production though, can be really great at times, the song "Human Host", for example, reminded me of a looser, less lo-fi version of something from White Ring's debut. That being said, there are also a number of songs where I wish they pushed their ... read more

Worldrequest - album25

Fast-paced but also easy on the ears. The bitcrushed production gives this album a pretty cool aesthetic and sound. It isn't the most interesting thing in the world, and gets repetitive after a while, but it can also be pretty charming at points.

"@avg_music_enjoy nearly 2 years late but just listened to trench and holy shit it was incredible"
On JID - God Does Like Ugly
"@Phiroman I think it comes down to a personal preference thing, my favourite JID tracks are the ones where he's the main focus throughout. Not saying he can't bounce off others well, but I think he really shines when it's just him rapping his heart out."
On JID - God Does Like Ugly
"@Phiroman I expected this album to be weaker than the forever story, but it's weaker in ways I wasn't expecting, if that makes sense? I appreciate him not trying to recapture the forever story's magic, instead stretching his legs and trying out different musical influences on some tracks. I think by "disappointed", I just mean that I wish this album was more consistent quality-wise. Also by "Not giving it his all" I was referring to the tracks where the features feel like they do a lot of heavy lifting, and JID is less present than I was expecting."
On Armand Hammer - Race Music
"@Phiroman I know they've collaborated before, but this is one of the first times they've come together to make an entire project with a shared vision. Because of this, there are ways they bounce off each other that would be refined over time. Their rapping abilities and writing are still really impressive."
