Me giving this a positive rating ≠ me condoning what this guy did. Objectivley I know this album sucks, but this just tickles my brain in such a specific way, it's musical crack. Not really sure if I'll keep this rating and review or not, I'll see how I feel about it later.
Thank you @Farsin for sending me your new album!
The first track is one of the most insane songs I've heard all year, it's such an uncomfortable liste, with what sounds like this woman groaning and struggling throughout. It's mixed beautifully with this super industrialwalls of noise, especially around the 12 minute mark. You really get a sense of scale on this album, everything sounds so damning, it manages to pull off the concept really well. I also think the inclusion of metal ... read more
It's crazy to think that there was a 10 year gap between this and their previous album, because they still sound as intense and enthralling as ever. I always find it hard to talk about Godspeed albums, because there's so much going on, and so much to soak in that it can be difficult to know where to start. I will say that the exclusion of spoken word recordings, outside of the opening of Mladic, really puts it into persepctive how well these guys can tell a story through ... read more
Thanks @weo for the recommendation!
I really llove the production here, going for a combination of digicore and indie. It works really well, the more low-key, acoustic moments make the loud digital parts so much more powerful and effective. The singing was a little hit or miss for me, though it did compliment the production at times.
Nothing outside of the first song really caught my ear, the slightly lofi sound to the production is definitely charming, but I think that it is neutered a little by how generic a lot of this EP sounds. I did like Tewari's singing, tough, so I'm still looking forward to anything new she releases.
This album really feels like you're wandering around a place you know nothing about, in a country whose language you don't speak, and just taking in the sounds around you. It has a certain vibe that I haven't really heard be replicated elsewhere, it's disorientating, but not to the point of being nonsense. Everything ends up coming together pretty nicely, with the folk aspects serving as a nice through-line for everything going on.
Thank you for sending me your new song!
This is by far your best and most mature song yet, the writing and production is so good, and I think the sample at the start does a great job at setting up the tone of the song. I still think the vocals could have been mixed a little better, but it's also a giant improvement from previous projects.
The instrumentation here was really light on the ears and pleasant to listen to. The writing took some time getting used to, it's pulling from a lot of different reference points, and as a result, the imagery here can feel all over the place. That isn't a bad thing, by the way, I actually really love how weird this album can get, and how unique it conveys a fragmented mind is.
Really love how off the wall this thing is the whole way through. The saxophone playing is really good, and the album sounds really crisp and well produced for 1969. The vocals (not counting the ones you can hear in the recording on the last track) was probably the most stand-out thing about the album though, it isn't "Singing" in the traditional sense, more it's holding a note for varying periods of time. It's not on every track, but whenever they are present, they ... read more
It's rare that depression is conveyed in a way that is so blunt, and it makes for a pretty hard album to talk about. There isn't really any nuance to the writing here, and that's the point, it's supposed to be a portrayal of a person who has completely lost hope. The production here feels like a slightly more acoustic, stripped back version on what was heard on Deathconsciousness, and it leads to the album sounding a lot more personal and individual. This album also weirdly ... read more
Thank you @Astroma for sending me your new EP!
I thought the super distorted and noisy moments were really cool and unique, at least compared to what else I've heard from you. It can feel pretty fragmented and a little directionless at times, but that's to be expected if you're just experimenting around, so it's not a huge complaint. I do think you're really nailing down the dark, gloomy aesthetic more and more, which is cool, and makes the music stand out that much ... read more
This was so much fun to listen to. The first song lulls you into a false sense of security with how serene it sounds, but pretty much every other song on the album was this blood pumping metal music. All the electronic and glitched elements worked so well in making the album way hard-hitting, it sounds as if the music can barely be contained and is breaking at the seams. It sounds like it's from a rhythm game or a Doom soundtrack, it's great.
Kiki Rockwell is probably one of the most unique figures in pop music. While their album from last year leaned completely into the pagan medievel aesthetic, this EP goes for a combination of singer-songwriter and off kilter, sometimes puzzling production choices. This EP doesn't really feel as fleshed out as their album, which makes sense considering this is a debut. Though, the fact that this is entirely self-produced is really impressive for how good it sounds, there's a fusion of a ... read more
Really fun listen, thematically it can be a little all over the place, but I think that's also what makes it so entertaining to listen to. It sounds like different characters are being portrayed in each song, and the large vocal and emotional range of the singer really sells it, going from mumbled talking to screaming instantly. Instrumentally, the combination of prog, punk and jazz remind me of a combination of Black Midi and Squid, you can also hear some Primus influences with the ... read more
Of course the production is incredible, Danger Mouse's sample flipping suits DOOM's style of rapping really well. The writing here feels much more tongue in cheek than anything else I've heard from MF DOOM, and I think the overall more comedic theme works to the album's benefit and detriment. On the one hand, it sets this album apart from his others, and it shows his versatility as a rapper. However, it also makes the skits, which were always my least favourite moments from ... read more
I wish the vocals weren't so quiet in the mix at times, because this has the potential to be a really great lofi indie album. Melodies will very suddenly come in and out, and yet the album never feels messy, at least instrumentally, it's really impressive. I also liked some of the old-school, almost Lemon Twigs style of throwback sounds that were present, especially on the last track.
Really cool album here. It's a jazz fusion album combining elements of bagpipes with East Asian instrumentation (I think, apologies if I got that wrong). The singing can be a little hit or miss for me, sometimes they feel shoehorned in, but other times it helps build texture and atmosphere. Overall a decent and creative album, definitely deserves more rating.
Thanks to @tarul for sending me your song!
Really good singing here. The production is incredibly clean, it's a good combination of alternative from the 90s and indie vocals.
