yeule - Evangelic Girl is a Gun
62

I wish I liked this more, but it just felt like a weak combination of what was on softscars and Glitch Princess

Acromanic - OUTTAKES
72

Thanks @jjen for sending me your new mixtape!
This whole thing was fun to listen to, especially for a collection of throwaways. Though, some ideas definitely sound more fully realized than others, which is to be expected form a project like this. Also I would say I defnitely prefer the more straightforawrd dnb stuff to anything else on here.

The Third Eye Foundation - You Guys Kill Me
77

Really trippy and immersive album. The drum and bass elements are a lot less apparent on first glance, it more serves to add texture to the music. It's secondary to the ambient, IDM style beats that soaks the whole album in this slightly insidious, or at least unnerving feel to the music here. It gives the feeling of acknowledging that something is wrong, but choosing not to do anything about it and letting it wash over you.

Paavoharju - Yön mustia kukkia
90

The last Paavoharju album, released after a 10 year hiatus, and about a month before they announced their disbandment. I have to say, Paavoharju have been one of my favourite little oddities of a band for a while now, their combination of ambience, folk and psychedelia has been nothing less than astounding. They manage to create music that truly feels like you're floating in space, everything they touch is beautiful. Even when they tried their had at hip hop, they managed to create an ... read more

Not Marshall - ELLIX
87

Thank you @Marshall4Real for sending me your album!
I don't think I've ever heard an album sound simultaneously so laid back and aggressive at the same time. There's a certain sound to the music here that I can't really compare any other electronic album. I'm not sure if the album sounds "Lo-fi", but it's produced in a really unique way that makes the thing fresh the whole way through. It definitely doesn't sound 70 minutes long, the album moves at a ... read more

John Coltrane - Blue Train
85

Perhaps it isn't super out-there composition-wise, but it doesn't need to be. This is a set of really great pieces of Jazz, with everything coming together so well. Definitely recommend this album for anyone interested in getting into Jazz.

The Roots - undun
81

Sublime production, you can tell that they're pulling from so many different influences to create something probably timeless sonically. Unfortunately, this is a case of all of the verses here being amazing, but the choruses being really lacking and breaking the momentum. It's only a couple tracks, such as Lighthouse and One Time, and it's a shame, because I can see this being one of my favourite rap albums of the 2010s. As it stands, it's still a great album with really ... read more

Swans - The Seer
95

Fun fact: One of my first musical memories was going to a festival with my dad when I was 6 and being kept awake in my tent hearing this album being performed live.
Yeah, this is about as good as everyone says it is, it feels like such a more realized project than their previous. This is also probably on par with SFTB in terms of how many different musical styles come together so beautifully. While that album served as the band's last statement, at least at the time, there is something so ... read more

Massive Attack - Mezzanine
73

It's bizarre, on a techical level, this album is nearly perfect, but in terms of personal enjoyment, there was much more left to be desired. It took a while for a lot of the music here to really click with me, and for things to start to fall into place. Again this album has been produced phenomenally, and the performances here are all really distinct, unique and interesting to listen to. It's an album I'm probably going to revisit sometime.

Borbetomagus - Snuff Jazz
89

"Snuff Jazz" is an accurate term, because I don't think I've heard of a more extreme, disgusting, take on free jazz, or just jazz music in general. This is a prime example of "Harsh Noise Jazz". The whole performance sounds like you let go of a balloon, and you're watching fly around everywhere. There were times where I couldn't tell if I was hearing somebody scream or if the instruments were that distorted. The kinda low quality of the recording and live ... read more

Alex Zhang Hungtai - Young Gods Run Free
72

Pretty much sounds like someone recording themselves making random noises with whatever they had lying around. I will say there does seem to be some method to the madness here, there's somewhat of a sinsiter undertone to a lot of the music here. The way the instruments are layered on top of each other, and the repetitive nature of the music here makes for a very unique album texture-wise. I also liked how everything slowly dissipated towards the end.

Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
75

Surprised I didn't love this as much as what else I've heard from Tom Waits. It has everything you would expect, off-kilter production, Waits' raspy voice, and bizarre writing, and Tom Waits does a pretty good job at bring you into his own world. Don't get me wrong, this was still a good album, I just failed to click with this album in the same way I had with the other albums I had heard from him, and I'm not sure why.

M.I.A. - Arular
85

This was just so much fun to listen to. The production was bouncy and constantly taking left turns, it feels like it's taken straight out of the mid 2000s interent era, yet has simultaneously not really aged at all. Have absolutely got to check out more of M.I.A.'s music.

John Michel - Egotrip
88

This is some of the best production I've heard on an album this year, I can see these guys going far. It's also a pretty accessible record, everything flows together so well. There is a self aware quality to the writing here, John Michel is embracing his bragging, while also being painfully aware of how quickly it could all fall, it makes for a very humanizing album. Really excited to see where these guys go from here, because this is insanely good.

The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand
96

Such an overwhelming album, It's rare that I've heard an album with such a hard hitting instrumentation the entire time. It's like if you took the noisiest moments from Deathconciousness, and made an entire hour long album from it. The guitars here are some of the most powerful I've ever heard. This album also never feels like it's loud for the sake of being loud, everything here is done with heart and real intent. That goes for the vocals too, though they're ... read more

Yung Abes - Apertura.
80

Thanks @yungabes_ for sending me your album!
This is some pretty good ambience, the vocal samples here were really cool and added a lot to the atmosphere of the album. It feels like you're in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night, and being barely able to make out distant sounds of civilization.

Fauxroot - Dream
84

Thank you for sending me your new song!
Really great instrumental, I love how everything in the first half builds up into the second half. This could be on a noisy shoegaze album and it wouldn't sound out of place at all.

Hekla - Turnar
86

Really great, effective, and well textured album. It feels a lot more expansive than their previous albums, while it still is a Theremin album, there's a subtle industrial feel to everything that makes the horror on the album feel a little more alive.

Bowery Electric - Beat
82

The compositions here are really rich in sound, but not in a way you'd usually expect it to be. This album's sound is reflected perfectly by the album cover, it's cold, dark, and desolate, but there's still something familiar about it. It's all really pretty.

Tune-Yards - w h o k i l l
78

A very fun and weird pop album. It combines elements of electronic, jazz, folk, and pop in a way that, while sometimes coming off as cluttered, is still really unique. There's so much going on at all times, and the singing just soars above everything, so it's a surprisingly beautiful album at times also.

On JID - God Does Like Ugly
"@Phiroman I think it comes down to a personal preference thing, my favourite JID tracks are the ones where he's the main focus throughout. Not saying he can't bounce off others well, but I think he really shines when it's just him rapping his heart out."
On JID - God Does Like Ugly
"@Phiroman I expected this album to be weaker than the forever story, but it's weaker in ways I wasn't expecting, if that makes sense? I appreciate him not trying to recapture the forever story's magic, instead stretching his legs and trying out different musical influences on some tracks. I think by "disappointed", I just mean that I wish this album was more consistent quality-wise. Also by "Not giving it his all" I was referring to the tracks where the features feel like they do a lot of heavy lifting, and JID is less present than I was expecting."
On Armand Hammer - Race Music
"@Phiroman I know they've collaborated before, but this is one of the first times they've come together to make an entire project with a shared vision. Because of this, there are ways they bounce off each other that would be refined over time. Their rapping abilities and writing are still really impressive."
