Starts off great, but slowly goes downhill as the album went on. I can appreciate that Blur are trying something a bit more outside their wheelhouse, and I do think there are a couple songs on here which serve as pretty interesting takes on Britpop. Though I wish I could say this album clicked with me more, but it just didn't. It was still a decent listen overall.
Thanks @Astroma for sending me your new EP!
I really love the spaced out production and performance. There's a certain combination of ambience, sound collage, and hip hop that I haven't really heard done before. It works really well in creating this immersive atmosphere in the music. The rapping here reminded me of CIties Aviv with how it's almost buried in the production, really cool stuff.
It's pretty much an expansion of everything their debut was. Serj Tankian sounds so much more angrier on this album, and given the slightly more political edge this album has, everything has this seething rage to it. Personally, I don't think it's "Best metal album of all time" level good, but I definitely understand it's placement as a classic metal album.
Some questionable lines, I get that a lot of the writing here is supposed to be tongue in cheek, but a lot of times the writing just came of as tacky, even if it isn't supposed to be taken seriously. The Beastie Boys really sell it though with their performances, a lot of this album is celebratory shouts and cheers, and I admit it can be a little infectious at times. The production here is the main highlight for me though, the combination of rap and rock is done in a way that still sounds ... read more
Really love how high energy the whole album is. The band do a great job at combining elements of electronic, punk, and rock music to create their own unique sound. I really love how the synth just completely cuts through the songs here at times. I also thought the shouting style vocals worked well with everything else that was going on in the album. It did get a little repetitive towards the end though.
Thanks @Snowyfighter for sending me your album!
This is great! I love how large everything feels, the post-rock and alternative elements are blended really well. The vocals were really powerful and hard-hitting. There are so many beautiful moments here, like on Wallcrawler, where everything comes together in this sort of crescendo, before dissipating into almost atmospheric instrumentals and low-key vocals for The Day the Devil Dies, before exploding again with super hard riffs and vocals. I really love how unique the production is here, it's a really cool array of different styles, and they all come together really well. The industrial feel of the album at the start transitions quite nicely into the more stripped back middle portions. The spoken word elements really ties all of the different styles together, and creates a level of consistency throughout.
The Flam is a pretty good free jazz album, the compositions seem to wander around the place, but everything seems to come together by the end. I specifically loved how good the drums sounded throughout the whole thing, they alone were really exciting to listen to. Also the bass on the 4th track sounded incredible. Though it was rare, there were times where I felt as though this album seemed aimless, specifically towards the start, but you could also put that down to me still getting used to the ... read more
A protest album written while in exile from a military dictatorship, so Chico Buarque's writing comes from a place of lived experiences. I'm surprised, given the context of the album's creation, it sounds as relaxed as it does, perhaps that's just the nature of smaba music. All of the instruments sound so great here, the come in like bright sparks of hope the elevate the messaging of the songs, and to make Buarque's soft singing almost ethereal.
Found this song by complete accident and it's one of the most beautiful songs I've heard all year. The light instrumentation and almost atmospheric singing combine in an almost Ichiko Aoba way, and it sounds absolutely gorgeous. My only complaint is that it's a little too short. Highly recommend everyone check this song out, I can't believe artists who are releasing such incredible have such little following.
The production here is sublime, everything is dreched in this psychedelic sound that makes the whole album feels so great to listen to. It has a distinct sounds to it, and it sticks to it the whole time, leading to an incredibly consistent album, quality-wise and sonically. Just a solid album all around, that I feel like you could play to anyone and they would enjoy.
It's a pretty album of guitar instrumentals with some light singing here and there. There's something so charming about this album, perhaps its the age, Cotten's weathered singing, or the relaxing yet intricate guitar playing, but everything comes together so great.
I don't even know where you begin to make something like this. It's probably the most ambitious album of the year so far, and I can see it turning plenty of people away. I'm not going to act like I know what's going on in the story, but I definitely found it entertaining and captivating. Alexander Kent's performance here is 10x more all over the place and intense than on The Lamb As Effigy, which was already a pretty intense album, he goes from muttering to screaming ... read more
Thanks to @Marshall4Real for sending me your song!
Absolutely insane stuff, it sounds like you took the spaced out aestethic of your previous song and made an incredibly fast paced Iglooghost-Arca fusion style electronic song. The whole song is really exciting, constantly switching up rythms and styles, but it never feels cluttered or like anything clashes against each other too much. Really looking forward to the album now.
Thanks to @ShirubaGin for the recommendation!
This album switches from sounding super generic and super creative constantly, and it can lead to the ep sounding a little disjointed when taken as a whole. I thought the singing was good, but it didn't always compliment the production. That being said, everything here is really well made and polished, especially for a project with such small traction.
I really wished I liked this album more, because the good moments here are really fun and catchy. It's a shame that most of the album failed to click with me.
I have no idea how I have gone this long without listening to a full Beatles album (at least not counting the ones I listened to as a child with my dad), so I guess there's no better place to start than here. With their debut album a lot of what makes it interesting, at least to me, is its historical importance rather than its actual musical quality. That's not to say that this is a bad album by any means, it has a few highpoints, and the singing here has a certin bite to it that puts ... read more
