It's a little plain, especially when you compare it to Watch This! but Jean Deaux still gives a pretty good performance, and is probably the highlight of the album.
Such an insanely creative album, each track flows so well into the next. The combination of jazz and electronics is something I haven't seen executed to this degree. It's music that sounds like it came from another planet, I don't understand how someone thought of making something like this.
I am only here for the Ravyn Lenae song, and unsurprisingly, it was the best song on the EP. It's obviously not something to be taken that seriously. The songs feel a little incoherent, the production is decent I guess, but Peggy doesn't do it any justice, thhe whole EP was just uninteresting.
Phenomenal production, the quality is such a high standard for being a debut album. Earl was already in his own lane, with an honest writing style that feels like it predates a lot of what's present in modern abstract hip hop. Earl Sweatshirt's rapping has been hit or miss before, it can verge on spoken word, and doesn't always compliment the production or general vibe of the song. Thankfully that isn't the case here with the moody production and sometimes multi-phased song ... read more
The lo-fi production makes the whole album sound gorgeous. The singing is incredible, it's has that typical twee pop sweetness to it, but the melodies on this album are really catchy, it's the type of stuff you would expect of a more mainstream act, so I'm surprised I haven't heard of this band before. There's also a cover of The Velvet Underground's Femme Fatale that, in my humble opinion, surpasses the original.
Absoluetely insane production here, everything flows so naturally into the next, and nothing has really aged at all in the 15+ years since its release. The genere fusion here isn't something I've really seen done to this degree. It sounds like everything was made to be as powerful and geadbanging as possible. The last song also worked as a great crescendo to everything, with the guitar soaring above everything else.
Couldn't get into this one unfortunately, the production is decent, and all of the individual parts are there, but it just didn't come together for me.
I can't believe I completely missed this album last year, because this is some next level stuff. The production is a beautiful fusion of hip hop, drum and bass, and super out there industrial stuff. Every single song here packs a punch, and it's just really fun to listen to on top of. It's consistent, while also never falling into being repetitive, it has a central sound to it and it tries to twist that sound into as many things as possible.
Ogi, in her debut EP, has already established herself as a formidable force in modern neo-soul music. Her singing is absolutely incredible and her ear for compelling melodies is apparent throughout, and the production is great. Still places to improve, but I'm looking forward to hearing from more from this artist. Huge recommendation if you're into artists like Mereba, Cleo Sol or Orion Sun.
A very intense album. I want to give it a relisten so I can properly digest it, but this is great, surprised it took me this long to get to it.
Badu's singing is absolutely gorgeous and carries a lot of these songs. Instrumentally I was reminded of The Roots' Things Fall Apart (Makes sense considering they did some production on here). Some of the songs here felt a little too same-y, which you could argue makes for an increidbly consistent and cohesive album, but it also meant some of the less interesting songs dragged a little.
For some reason this album just wouldn't click with me at first, it wasn't until the second half that everything started to fall into place and I started to "get" it. It's as if you took CAN's "Peking O" and decided to make an entire album out of it, it's trying to be as weird and off the wall as possible, and sometimes it can be a little too much. It's the type of album that sticks with you, the singing is incoherent, the insturment sound ... read more
Thanks @PeytonHezekiah (and a late happy birthday!) for sending me your new EP!
Probably the best rapping I've hard from you so far, and the whole thing was just really well made. The production here also complimented the rapping quite well. My one gripe would be that the last song, while it sounds great, feels a little out of place compared to everything else going on.
Thanks @ShirubaGin for sending me your album!
Pretty good and catchy production here, I thought it dragged in a few places, but it was a decent combination of experimental and commercial styles of electronic music and didn't come off as clunky or disorganized.
There are really high highs, and really mediocre lows. Also the my bloody valentine sample at the end hit my like a truck.
Probably the first George Clanton project that's really clicked with me. All of the porduction just fell into place, and it sounded great, everything just felt so laid-back, it was incredible.
Thanks to @Marshall4Real for sending me your song!
I like the more atmospheric approach to this one, everything from the vocals to the instrumentals, sounded really spaced out, and it created a really unique, dreamy vibe. It's a combination of sounds that you wouldn't expect to work, and yet do. imo an improvement from the previous single, but both are good.
I saw this become one of the highest rated live albums of all time and I was interested, since I had never heard of Juan Gabriel, and had pretty much no experience in the genres here. After listening, I have to say, this is some of the most beautiful stuff I've ever heard. The emotion in Gabriel's voice is palpable, and every aspect of the instrumentation comes together perfectly. The horns cut through the entire performance, and all the orchestral elements carry such a feeling of ... read more
It has it's catchy moments, and the porduction is really good, there just wasn't enough to make me love this EP.
This album shows the musical range Phil Elverum, how he can make so many styles of music sound natural. It's probably the most technically impressive album i've heard from Phil, everything comes together so well, sparse soundscape transition naturally into noisy and cluttered. The drums overwhelm the entire song at points, in a good way, they're so powerful that they almost can't be contained in the music itself. The singing, when it's Phil, is phenomenal, it sounds a ... read more
