It's a fun album from beginning to end, but I can't see myself returning to much of these songs.
Thanks @Marshall4Real for sending me your new song!
Really cool production here, the autotuned vocals that come in towards the end really elevate this song, even if they're only present for a short time. It's also a pretty good change of pace to "My Own Garden".
It's to be expected that Gismonti's debut album wasn't going to be as polished as some of the stuff he would follow this up with, but this is still a respectable listen. Already, Gismonti showcases a wide range of talent, elements of jazz and samba are meshed pretty well here, and his singing is really pleasant to listen to as well. While it doesn't really come close to the highs of some other stuff I've heard from him, this still is worth checking out if you want some ... read more
I can see a big downgrade compared to their previous. There's something that's just missing from this album, the beats weren't as interesting as before, which is really detrimental for a group like Tribe. On top of that, there just seemed to be less passion behind what was being said here, kinda dissappointing if I'm being honest.
Following Illmatic was never going to be easy, and this definitey isn't an album on that level, but this is still worth recognizing what this sets out to do. I appreciate that Nas isn't just trying to make another Illmatic, but rather push his sound further, and explore more themes. I thought "I Gave You Power" was a highlight of the album, simply because it's written from the perspective of a gun. I also thought that "Nas Is Coming" gave a unique take on the ... read more
This album is pretty much an improvement on everything his debut was, I thought the production was a step up, the features were stronger, and Rocky sounded more confident here. I think the slightly more commercial edge to much of the music here compliments the more experimental elements on this album. Everything here just "clicked" with me a little more.
Heart pumping action from beginning to end, probably the most explosive release I've heard from Machine Girl. It's putting a modern spin on the digital hardcore foundations that Atari Teenage Riot made back in the 90s. There's a lot of small details that aren't immediately noticeable, but come together to create a truly great album.
I love how much this album embraces being weird. So many songs are these crazy character pieces that really immerse you into a certain world, and others are abstract stories where you can't quite work out what's going on at any one time. The singing here is very unique, it gives the album a very slightly theatrical vibe. I think it's definitely a case of the first half being much stronger than the second, but this is no doubt an incredibly creative and impressive debut album.
Arca has quickly become one of my favourite producers of all time, their ability to create these expansive, wholly unique soundscapes is unmatched. This album is perhaps the best showcase of that. This truly sounds apocalyptic, nothing here sounds how you would expect it to, random elements are thrown into the mix at almost complete random. With it being an hour long, Arca really gets to showcase all of their skills, and what makes them special in music, not a moment here is wasted, all the ... read more
It started to drag a little towards the end, but the ambition here is respectable. Pink Siifu combines a number of different musical styles here, I mean, look at the genre list, it's impressive that the album sounds as cohesive as it does. The production is probably some of the most creative I've heard all year, it's a marriage between super abstract and more conventional hip hop beats. If anything, I wish this album leaned more heavily into the noisy, industrial stuff that was ... read more
This is great, everything sounds so crisp and well put together, the post-rock influences combine really well with the metal influences. It feels so giant in magnitude, almost every song takes the time to properly immerse you in everything going on. The last song being almost pure noise is great, it feels almost apocalyptic. I still don't love the black metal vocals, but they aren't as present here as they are on some other albums, so it isn't really much of a complaint.
With everything going on at once, it can be a little overwhelming at times, but there's no doubt that this is one of the most insane releases of the year so far.
A new lineup and new sound was going to be strange at first. I purposely decided not to listen to any of the singles prior to the full album, because I wanted to go into this completely blind. Immediately, I was struck by how good the singing is, I've seen people be conflicted on Isaac's vocals, I personally love them for how raw they are, but I can see why it might turn others away. This however, is a complete change of pace, the singing here is so clean and beautiful, it was ... read more
This could be the greatest album of all time if the whole thing is as good as these singles
It picks up a bit towards the end, but I wish Amine went further with the sounds here. The really bouncy production and hyperpop works well as a foundation, but I wish it did more with those musical styles. It's still a pretty fun listen though.
Beck turns up all of the weirdness that was on Mellow Gold up to 11 on this album. There's a larger emphasis on hip hop production, but Beck makes it his own thing by combining alt rock instrumentation and really bizzare vocals that can vary from regular folk style singing to distorted singing. Even with all these different styles crashing together, the album never feels messy, since Beck's personality brings all of these songs together. While I think the high points on Mellow Gold ... read more
It's a lot of the same of Paavoharju, there are some moments here that sound a little more standard and even commercial than usual, but a lot of this EP is them doing what they do best. Their unqiue blend of psychadelic folk and field recordings works to create these intricate, unique soundscapes that are absolutely beautiful to listen to. I would say that this is a little noisier and distorted than usual, a lot of the music here can have this chaotic energy to it, but it's treated ... read more
Honestly one of your best songs, I think the chemistry the two of you have is great. The rapping is great, the writing is really entertaining to listen to, and has a lot of personality. If I had to choose one, I would say that Peyton's verse was stronger than Torrances, though both were great.
Absolutely insane stuff. For how it combines some instrumental hip hop with weird samples on some tracks, it sounds like a predecessor to a lot of plunderphonics, especially albums like Endtroducing on a few songs. The fact that some pieces of music here are coming up on 50 years old soon, it's crazy that they still sound boundary pushing even today. Each song manages to come together so cohesively despite being so all over the place. It really doesn't sound like anything that came ... read more
While I don't think it reaches the same heights as the band did on their 2016 album, it still has a lot of quirks to it that makes it a unique and refreshing experience. I think the vocals can get some getting used to, especially in the first track, but they aren't really a detriment to the overall album experience, and improve considerably by the end. I also love the very subtle industrial undertones to much of the music here, it adds to the atmosphere and unique feel to the songs. ... read more
