One of the most important albums of all time, being one of the setting stones for a lot of the experimental rock music that would come out in the nearly 60 years since this album's release. The songs on this album range from serene, like the opener "Sunday Morning", to noisy, like the closer "European Son". I can only imagine how wild it would have been to hear a song like European Son back in 1967, it's great to hear the foundation of so many albums that have come ... read more
This is a really fun album, the album isn't exactly subtle in its writing, but I think it works with how in-your-face everything else. This album honestly sounds like it came straight out of the 2000s, it has this nostalgic quality to it, which is especially present on tracks like "Tamagotchi". It does get a little repetitive after a while, though, and I feel like the final track is too much of a tonal shift to be as effective as I think the album wanted it too be.
Thanks to @Snakesuitskin for recommending me this!
I'm surprised at how naturally the Celtic folk sounds combing with these droning instrumentals and somber atmosphere. The mix between the traditional style of singing and the heavy production makes the album feel so damning and large in scale, it really is a one of a kind album. The stories that are told through the writing a given so much more weight now that they are presented in such a way. My one gripe with this album is that the ... read more
Jessica Pratt's debut album, which I'm surprised has taken me this long to listen to, is great. Pratt has such a unique voice that elevates all of these songs so much. The guitar playing here sounds really soft, and creates this warm comforting atmosphere. It's clear that she's still trying to find her distinct sound that she would find in later albums, but I think it's interesting that this doesn't really embrace the vintage sound in a way her following albums ... read more
Even though I haven't watched the film this is the soundtrack to, this is such a beautiful album. The mix of different styles here are really good, it means that this album never felt boring to listen to, and had this consistent level of quality throughout. Really great and relaxing to put on in the background, makes me want to check out more of his music.
This is a behemoth of an album, it's 40 tracks, 1 hour and 14 minutes of black metal mixed with shoegaze about plants. The vocals mixed with the amateur sounding production can definitely wear you down after a while, and I felt that this album showed everything it had to offer by track 20 (but then it gets randomly really good towards the end). I can appreciate the ambition, especially this being their debut, but this just didn't hold a candle to what else I've heard from them.
There's a very subtle sadness I find with this album, the noises and samples in this album sound like their drowning, slowly being forgotten, reduced to droning repetition. It's an album that seems really simple on the surface, but has an insane amount of depth to it.
In honour of Spellling announcing a new album, I've decided to check out her music. I know nothing about Spellling as a musician, so I'm going into this album completely blind. This is a really weird listen, the mix between artsy ambient pop music, and noisy industrial music can be jarring at points, but I think it makes the whole album pretty distinct. Spellling's whisper-y, almost talking style of singing can get some getting used to. This definitely sounds like a debut album, ... read more
A really beautiful album, I liked how different themes were explored using only ambient music, on top of being a very peaceful album to listen to.
The theremin-lead production here creates such a cold atmosphere. The ethereal sounding singing also added to the whole album sounding quite ominous. The album does get a little repetitive towards the end, since I guess there is only so much you can really do with a theremin. That being said, I thought it ended in a pretty satisfying way. I prefer this to their 2022 album, I feel as though the atmosphere this album creates makes for an overall better listening experience compared to that one.
I can see a lot of potential in an album like this being really good, but I just don't think that the ideas here are pushed far enough to be all that interesting.

Probably billy woods' best album, the atmosphere here is so dark, thanks to both Kenny Segal's production and woods' rapping. This is probably the most experimental I've heard billy woods (At least solo albums), and the writing here feels so personal, even compared to his other albums.
2nd Listen: 76 --> 85
Becoming more experienced in the works of both billy woods, and especially Moor Mother, has helped me appreciate the intricacies and more experimental elements of this album more. Given how different their approach to rap music is, I'm surprised that this album sounds as cohesive as it does. Moor Mother's unique delivery and production really shines, and works well with billy woods' writing. All the features here do a really good job as well, overall a ... read more
So many random sounds are thrown together here and it somehow creates a coherent album.
This is a case where I respect what the album sets out to do more than I personally enjoy it. The layered vocals and really subdued instrumentation create this unique sound, as if this album was recorded in one giant empty room. The writing relies on heavy repetition, and, when mixed with the vocals, feels hypnotic. This album really feels like I'm looking into the mind of someone. Despite all that, I wish this album was more fleshed out, the songs feel too short to amount to anything ... read more
I've never properly checked out Asian Glow's music, (outside of their collab EP with Weatherday) and I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I don't have much listening experience with Noise Pop or Indietronica, but I thought the electronic elements here sounded really good and pretty unique compared to similar albums. I also really liked the singing here, it mixed well with the overall atmosphere of the songs. Makes me want to check out more of their stuff!
Joni Mitchell's singing here is absolutely enchanting, and her writing is so comforting in a strange way. Her storytelling touches on themes that weren't anything new at the time, but she approaches them in such a relatable way, I feel like anyone who listens to this album will find a piece of themselves in it.
Yeah this is just really sad, kinda hard to put into words, other than I've never heard something that sounds like this before.
