Vampire Weekend - Only God Was Above Us
92

Surprised it took me this long to get to this album. This has some of the best production on any album I've heard this year, it's so dreamy and consistent throughout the album. The production also helps the album soar when it needs to. This is also surprisingly one of the catchiest albums of the year. I think the fact that every song sounds similar adds a lot to the album quality-wise, the whole sounds like one cohesive project, with each song having a shared vision. The quality of ... read more

Parquet Courts - Wide Awake!
78

This album is full of energy, there's a lot of different little things going on here that make it a really enjoyable listening experience.

PinkPantheress - Heaven knows
70

A lot of personality and charm that made the mixtape so great is sadly gone here. Still, the album is pretty catchy, the pop production is decent, and it's good to see PinkPantheress expand and evolve her sound.

LAUREL - Petrol Bloom
74

Thank you to @Missing_Lyriks for the recommendation!
This EP is of a quality I would expect of a mainstream artist, the production is sleek and obviously very 80s inspired. Not really much to say other than a solid pop album from beginning to end.

Drixxo Lords - Unimon Superstar
72

The mix between vaporwave and cloud rap is certainly a unique one, and I think it works here, despite me not being a huge fan of cloud rap. The word I would use to describe this album is charming, it has a distinct sound to it, and it keeps to it the entire runtime. It doesn't get annoying or repetitive by the end of the album, even if some of the production and vocal effects can be annoying.

Lianne La Havas - Lianne La Havas
88

Thank you to @Missing_Lyriks for recommending this to me!
From the very beginning of this album, I am immediately hit with Lianne La Havas' great voice. Her soul influenced vocals make many of the songs soar to incredible heights, and make the sentiments in this album a lot stronger than they would be otherwise. In addition, she manages to effortlessly switch between vocal styles, going from this powerful style of singing as seen on the opening track, to much quieter and subdued, like seen ... read more

U.S. Girls - In a Poem Unlimited
85

This album is just pop banger after pop banger, the writing on a few songs, like Incidental Boogie, don't really go with the atmosphere these songs build. But I honestly don't think that's a bad thing, it adds a lot of personality and saves a lot of these songs from falling into the trap of being generic that a lot of pop/dance music can fall into. Really pleasantly surprised with the quality of this album.

Tinashe - Quantum Baby
58

This album just never clicked with me for whatever reason, the production was decent, if a bit standard, and no individual song was bad, but it just didn't feel like a fulfilling album experience.

The Avalanches - Wildflower
69

This album is, on a technical level, incredibly impressive, the way different samples are interwoven with original production to create this lovely summer-y atmosphere is something I haven't seen any other album do as effectively. That being said, when it comes to personal enjoyment, not so much, and tracks like "The Noisy Eater" completely took me out of the experience.

Melt-Banana - Fetch
74

This is a lot, the vocals are definitely not what I expected, and needed some getting used to. Once you get past that, this album is wonderfully manic, with the vocals and the production being equally full of energy.

FKA twigs - LP1
75

This album works as an impressive debut for FKA twigs, right from the start, she established herself as a unique and powerful presence in the R&B/Art Pop scene, the production sounds pretty great, and twigs' voice is incredible. That being said, very few moments in the album itself stood out to me as being truly amazing. I'll probably listen to this again sometime, and hopefully I'll get something more from it.

Xiu Xiu - Arp Omni / Veneficium
89

This blew any and all expectations I had that Common Loon set me up for. I'm not even sure what to say here, just that I am now very excited for the album. Xiu Xiu are remaining as unpredictable as ever.

bliss3three - its so much brighter over here
86

I've loved pretty much everything bliss3three/bliss∞ has done, C3L3STIAL is one of my favourite albums of all time. They manage to capture a certain sound with their music that I have yet to see replicated. Thankfully, this album is no different, though does sound distinct from the previous projects I've heard from them. This album focuses a lot on creating these vast ambient soundscapes, while still keeping a lot of the vaporwave staples that they've shown in their music. ... read more

your arms are my cocoon - death of a rabbit
64

I really didn't like the self-titled EP of your arms are my cocoon, the mix of screamo and bedroom pop just didn't work for me at all and sounded like a complete mess. I think this album does a better job at combining the two elements, and doesn't sound as ridiculous. That being said, the album was still hard for me to get into, the first couple of tracks sounded very similar to their self-titled EP, but after a while, I started to get used to the harsher elements of the album. ... read more

LAUSSE THE CAT - The Girl, the Cat and the Tree
78

This EP is very densely made, no one idea stays around too long for it to get boring, and the random change into French on the final track was very surprising. Not everything works for me, I didn't really love the storybook/fairytale elements of the first few tracks, but plenty of ideas do work.

Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
91

Every single verse on this album is cold, every single member has great chemistry with each other, and each one has a distinct sound. The fact that every song is so densely written means that the songs sound a lot loner than they actually are, which isn't a bad thing for the record, it probably just comes from my inexperience in this era of hip hop. The production on this album is also super solid, especially given that it's over 30 years old, it's not all that complex or crazy, ... read more

----------100 FOLLOWER SPECIAL!----------

100 followers is crazy, thank you to every single one of you that has decided to follow me, or taken the time out of the day to read any one of my reviews.
I had the idea to review the debut album of black midi for a while now, but decided to wait until I reached 100 followers to listen to it. It just so happens that, the very day I reach 100 followers, is the same day the band decide to be "indefinitly over", which is a real shame. I was ... read more

Thanks @NoMindOfficial for sending this to me.
The production on this album is pretty good, I definitely prefer this song compared to the other track they sent me, the beat sounds a lot better here also. That being said, I'm not crazy on some of the vocal effect, it kind of made them pretty hard to understand.

94

Sounds like almost nothing like anything I've ever heard before, the energy on this EP is insane. An unstoppable wave of adrenaline from beginning to end.

Bedwetter - volume 1: flick your tongue against your teeth and describe the present.
71

The high points on this album are REALLY high, but the fact that only half the tracks on here have anything of any real substance is a little disappointing.

On JID - God Does Like Ugly
"@Phiroman I think it comes down to a personal preference thing, my favourite JID tracks are the ones where he's the main focus throughout. Not saying he can't bounce off others well, but I think he really shines when it's just him rapping his heart out."
On JID - God Does Like Ugly
"@Phiroman I expected this album to be weaker than the forever story, but it's weaker in ways I wasn't expecting, if that makes sense? I appreciate him not trying to recapture the forever story's magic, instead stretching his legs and trying out different musical influences on some tracks. I think by "disappointed", I just mean that I wish this album was more consistent quality-wise. Also by "Not giving it his all" I was referring to the tracks where the features feel like they do a lot of heavy lifting, and JID is less present than I was expecting."
On Armand Hammer - Race Music
"@Phiroman I know they've collaborated before, but this is one of the first times they've come together to make an entire project with a shared vision. Because of this, there are ways they bounce off each other that would be refined over time. Their rapping abilities and writing are still really impressive."
